Re: Pike - Pike Fishing

you hear of things like that, but i'm sure they're just "myths" but pike do have an anti quagelent (sp?) which stops the blood clotting and you will bleed for a long time, is what i've been told.

Re: Pike - Pike Fishing

The truth of the matter is that pike are very delicate fish...the big ones moreso than the Jacks. I am all for trying to dispell the ridiculous myths and false reputations that the pike has picked up over the years.......yes the pike is a 'perfect' predator in every way but if you know how to handle the fish it will do you no harm and you should do no harm to it.

If you are going piking i suggest a few essentials before you even think about wetting a line; 25+lb wire trace is a must so the pike does not bite through your line and end up with hooks stuck in its mouth/throat.

A decent size un-hooking mat with adequate padding.

A variety of forceps and long nosed pliers in case you get a deep hooked fish (no matter how carefull you are it does happen occasionally)

If you are fishing a patternoster rig you need to incorporate a weak link lead in case the pike snags you up and ends up with a length of line and heavy weight trailing from its mouth.

If you are a novice or not to confident in handling big pike i reccomend you invest in a butchers chainmail glove to eliminate cut hands.....the teeth 'are' sharp!

And last but definately not least if you are at all un-certain go with someone with piking expieriance untill you are confident yourself!!

All the above are my basic rules all designed with the fish in mind but remember if you use your common sense you wont go far wrong its the minority who abuse pike out of ignorance and fear who are more dangerous than the fish itself !

Yeah Dan this is true......the pike has this weapon in its arsenal so that if it bites a roach for example and drops it ,as the roach trys to escape the pike will use its incredible sense of smell to home in on its prey! Amazing eh.....the perfect predator!

Re: Pike - Pike Fishing

Hi Mikey.

I am going up to Glencoe in August this year for my 40th Birthday. Do you know any good spots up that way. I have heard that Loch Lomond is a top Pike Loch.

Smile Re: Pike - Pike Fishing

Watched Henry Gilby fly fishing for pike at Chew valley on the discovery channel last night. Definately have to give that a go. I fished a Civil Service trout flyfishing competition there a couple of years back & one guy hooked & landed a pike that weighed 38lb. Absolute monster, although it looked very old & had seen better days.

Re: Pike - Pike Fishing

Loch lomond is an excellant Piking water (in fact my P.B comes from there!!).If you are anywere near i reccomend you stopping and wetting a line, the only thing about Lomond is that it is not a short session water. By this i mean that you will have a better chance of catching a decent fish by plumbing your chosen swim and setting a few traps so to speak.

If you only have time for a short session i reccomend that you break out the lures, and by this i mean the heavy artillary!! Pike on Lomond (in my expieriance) respond better to big jerk baits, massive spoons and 6/7 inch plugs. Another lure that works well on the loch is the 'Bulldawg'.......in fact similar lures such as the 'helltail' and other big rubbers also work.

But i've found that for best results you should fire out 3 or 4 deads and sit back, all course baits work best but ive also had success on smelt and herring tails.

Good luck mate.......

Re: Pike - Pike Fishing

Going for Pike this morning and taking your advice.."When looking for a ideal peg to catch a pike just think “ if I was a pike were would be a good place to ambush some fish “ and you will not go far wrong"... I hope to land a big one too! Thanks and i'll post pics if I catch one!
