| autumn piking had a very nice days fishing today, there wasn't a lot about but the autumn colours and wildlife made it a wonderful day after my usual stupid o'clock start i was comfortable and fishing by 0500, it was chilly with a light north westerly breeze, made my way up a long peninsula that usually fishes better in the spring,but i had a feeling about the place  my baits were untouched until 0650 when i had a little 3 inch tug on a half mackerel this turned out to be a lively little 5 pounder , which was unhooked in the water, 10 minutes later and just as i got reorganised i had a one toner on my left rod,this was a popped up smelt, as soon as i struck the fish jumped clear of the water and gave a very good account of itself , this weighed in at 11lb 8oz , it was in typical autumn condition ,fit but very lean,in january it would probably go at least 16.  my first attempt at self taking ( could have been worse ) two fish before 0730 ? what a start ! but i didn't improve on that no matter how i tried i didn't get another bite,not that it mattered,it was a lovely sunny day and i enjoyed every minute.     |
