What's The Difference?

What is the difference between a Carp rod and a Pike Rod?

I currently have a 12ft and 10ft Carp rods the 12ft has, IIRC, a 2.75lb test curve and I think the 10ft one has a 2 or 2.5lb test curve.

Will these be okay for the occassional bit of Piking? Unless I got more into Piking I'd only ever really use lures and dead baits so no trolling or live baits. Oh and as for reels I have two Baitrunners loaded with 12lb & 15lb line, are these okay too?

Re: What's The Difference?

Off the top of my head I couldnt say what model they are (these aren't current models but ones I bought around 12 years ago and have been in cold storage for 10 years) but they each hold around 300m of 12lb line and are reasonably beefy. I think, stress think, that they might be something like Aero GT 6010's or possibly 5010's (but they look a little small in the pictures I've found of them)

Re: What's The Difference?

I use my fox 2.75 tc carp rods for pike fishing with 12lb line with no probs, pike rods are really just the same as carp rods in my eyes unless you want to do spinning and use lures then you would need a spinning rod.

Re: What's The Difference?

i have found that a 3lb tc rod has helped my piking,
i always used 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 tc rods until last winter, using a 3lb tc i find i have a rod that can easily cast the bigger deadbaits and still allowing me to use a 1oz lead to keep the line tight for good bite indication ,

Re: What's The Difference?

hello pal there is alot of diff between a carp rod and a pike rod

1 a pike rod is there to do a job because in the rubbish weather you will be fishing in you hardly see anybody

2 as for carp rods it is a SHOW thing when they are waiting for a run/bite they stand around looking at each others fishing tackle

but aslong as its a 12ft 2.5-3lb test curve rod in pretty good nick then it will do the job

Re: What's The Difference?

Reels are ideal ,i personally would use 15lb as a normal b/sMany anglers use a carp rod for pike fishing, There is little difference between a pike and a carp rod as far as style and strength are concerned. Yet a dedicated pike rod will have a more through action, for the faster action used for many long casting carp rods isn't necessary. So, although not strictly necessary, a rod especially designed for pike fishing will be the better option. for piking..

But you will still see most pike anglers using carp rods.
Hope this makes sense
