Your Biggest 'Accidental' Pike?

Pike fishing has always been one of the most enjoyable types of fishing to me, particularly the use of plugs and lures, or a well-placed deadbait. But as a fisherman who loves pike, and loves to target pike, the one thing which cannot be topped for me is when you hook a small fish only to suddenly and completely unexpectedly endup with a nice sized pike thrashing around on the end of your line.

More often than not, if you are fishing very light you have very little chance of landing the fish because of their power, and their razor sharp teeth which cut through the line with ease, but there is always the odd time you do manage to land the odd accidental pike, and I find the adrenaline of the unexpected, fantastic!

I am very interested to know from all you fellows, and ladies, what are your most memorable experiences of this nature with pike?

Re: Your Biggest 'Accidental' Pike?

I have only ever caught one this way. Once when Spinning for Perch I had my catch taken by a 4lb Pike. It came out of nowhere and gave me quite a start! Luckily I always use a wire trace even when only targeting Perch so I was able to land and safely return it to pinch someone else's catch!

Re: Your Biggest 'Accidental' Pike?

A couple of years ago i caught my first and only pike in a match, it weighed 3lb, i caught the pike in the dead of winter on 12oz bottom and a size 22 fine wire hook wilst fishing with pinkies on the feeder. The bite was one of the most gentles of takes and i thought i had hooked a small skimmer.

Re: Your Biggest 'Accidental' Pike?

used to catch pike (whilst match fishing) using double lob-worm dipped in pilchard oil on a long shank sea hook, not really accidental though.

had a 16lb take a roach head when fishing for eels, went absolutely mental on 2 1/4 tc rod.

Re: Your Biggest 'Accidental' Pike?

I had two weird experiences with pike when fishing on a tributary of the Adur. I reeled in my swinfeeder and at the last minute a little pike grabbed hold. It just held on until I slipped the net under it! Who needs hooks! The other one was even more bizarre. I was using a pole and maggot and was in the process of landing a skimmer when a big pike followed it right to the edge and then leapt out onto the bank. It flapped about and slid back in. I was so stunned I just sat there watching. I should have grabbed it and made it a p.b!!

Re: Your Biggest 'Accidental' Pike?

I hooked a big pike on a lobworm intended for perch! I didn't land it though. Also a mate hooked a Ruffe once, it swallowed the hook,he placed the line with the fish still on the end back in the water while he found his disgorger. then the drag screamed off! He had a pike on,but when he landed it the line and Ruffe had gone through behind it's gill and not through the mouth as you would expect!? It was only a small jack and it came to no harm, less can be said about the Ruffe!

Re: Your Biggest 'Accidental' Pike?

I was fishing for Roach, Perch and Tench in Birchmere lake in Thamesmead and was getting plenty of small fish one after the other, Suddenly it went really quiet....I then caught another small silver and whilst reeling it in WHACK a pike took it and what a fight on fairly light tackle....It Tail walked and everything....How I landed it I will never know!

Approx 10LB in weight!!

Re: Your Biggest 'Accidental' Pike?

as you all know i am a piker through and through, i have been piking for 30 years and have managed 10 20's in that time, one of them was accidental.i was fishing the kentish stour for roach, twenty years ago it was a prime roach river and 2 pounders were quite common, i was trotting a stick float through the swim with my centrepin and as is often the case i was getting a bit of trouble with pike grabbing the roach as i was reeling them in,
well i put a livebait out close by and hoped for the best,as i was reeling in a 1lb + roach it was taken by a pike, now normally a 11/2 lb hooklength doesnt last long in a pikes jaws but this one seemed to hold forever, about 30 minutes to be exact , long enough for me to get the net under a very large specimin,
it turned out the hook had come out of the roach and caught nicely in the scissors,
it was ironic that i had pike fished for most of that winter without any great success and caught my biggest fish of the season on a match rod and centrepin, it weighed 25lb 8 oz and is still my second best pike ever, UNTIL THIS WINTER !!!!
