spring in the air

it was cold with light breeze when i got to the lake this morning at 0400,a bright full moon low down in the western sky threw strange and eerie shadows as i walked the half mile or so to my chosen spot
my intention was to leapfrog down the bank like i did a couple of weeks ago with great success
i was fishing by 0445 and by 0530 everything was covered with a light frost which rapidly disappeared when the sun came up,and what a lovely one it was too

i had no action as usual in darkness , the buzzers staying quiet until 0615 when i had a dropped run which was followed swiftly by 2 more,3 dropped runs before 7 o'clock ??? whats going on thought i .
finally got my first fish at 0845 when a sharp drop back resulted in a little 4 pounder on a 1/2 mackerel, no matter what size it is,it was a blank buster
it was then i started leapfrogging down the bank and fish #2 came at 10.20 when another drop back saw a nice little 8 pounder on the bank,i caught it on the same 1/2 mackerel as the last pike
2 more leapfrogs later at 11 o'clock the lunacy started,i was just moving my clobber when another drop back gave me a lively fish of 10lb 12oz on a legered smelt,

while putting this back another rod shot off, this i missed on the strike,i now had 2 rods on the bank, just about got them back in the water when the 3rd rod gave me an absolute screamer on a 1/2 herring, this fish stayed deep and felt heavy,i thought a very large fish was on the end,it wasn't quite as large as i hoped when i chinned it out,but at 13lb 2oz it was a very nice looking fish which looked a lot bigger then it weighed

as i was putting this one back i had another fast take on a smelt, this resulted in a jack of about 6lb,
i had 3 fish in half an hour, missed one and to cap it all the wife phoned right in the middle of it all to have a whinge, i was knackered ,but had plenty of time for a rest, because i didn't have another fish.5 fish by 11,30 and no more for the rest of the day
i lost a small one just before i lifted him out late on ,but but it didn't matter a lot

it was a glorious day ,once the morning chill was gone there was an air of spring ,the sun was quite warm and there were buds all around on the trees,
there were even signs of fish spawning in the shallows, dare i say winter is over ?

Re: spring in the air

Great read Paul,

Is it spring already in Kent?

I think you still have time for sesion or 2, were probly still due a cold snap before its all over.

I've promised myself one Pike trip before the end of March

Look forward to reading about your Perch and Eel exploits this summer

Barrie
