I think that's potentially great news, let's hope the preparations don't get bogged down in the usual British "can't do" culture of beaurocracy and Health & Safety etc, etc...

Otherwise it could be the greatest national embarassment ever!!

I listened to London's final presentation this morning on the radio. Tony Blair amazed everyone by delivering his speech via a live video link from Gleneagles in FRENCH which he is completely fluent in. It came across as being in complete contrast with the mean and snobbish attitude that Chirac has been presenting over recent days. From all reports it went down extremely well and possibly swung the vote in London's favour. Seb Coe was pretty good too. I didn't hear Princess Anne who had spoken earlier but the commentators seemed to think she was pretty impressive too.

Don't feel too sorry for the French guys - just think of all the fun they're going to have taking it out on Chirac for their failure. He's probably not going to feel too chirpy at dinner at Gleneagles tonight. If he didn't fancy British food in the first place he's definitely not going to have much of an appetite tonight.

Here's how the voting went guys...

Four votes were enough to give London its victory over Paris. The final count was 54-50 to London.

London's victory was assured when Madrid was knocked out in the third round of voting.

The majority of the Spanish backers switched to London, pushing them over the line.

London led from the beginning, collecting 22 first round votes, followed by Paris, 21, Madrid, 20, New York, 19 and Moscow 15.

In the second round Madrid moved in front with 32 votes, trailed by London with 27, Paris 25 and New York 16.

But Madrid's Olympic hopes were short-lived as they crashed out in the third round, as London went back ahead, collecting the support of 39 IOC members.

Madrid slipped back to 31 and Paris increased to 33.

Yep - nice one Rob!!

However, Ben, we're talking 1.3 billion quid to build stadiums and another 8 billion quid on infrastructure (transport etc)... so, why wasn't this gonna get spent anyhow? We obviously need it.

Plus, where's it gonna come from - congestion charging on the beach??
