Smile East Yorkshire Holderness Coast

We arrived at the Car park, Easington Beach at 7.30am, to find the sea lashing up the cliffs. The wind felt stronger than the 8mph WNW, forecast, more an 18mph N.

As we had travel for more than 3 hours this was not going to deter us. When the Going Gets Tuff, We Go Fishing. Summer time, this was more like a Mid Winters Day.

Dave, Cliff and me were soon in to with our fishing attire, then heading south from the car park, along the cliff top pathway. Past the Concrete Pill Box the beach and cliff came together. This makes a gentle walk down to the sea’s edge. Setting up our Tripods n Rods it wasn’t long before our lines were in the water, 8am we were fishing.

Soon after Milesey, Marcus and Graham joined us; they also were not long in casting seaward, in hope of that Piscatorial Prize. The Cracc and banter soon got round to what and how we’d caught since our last meeting. No great monsters but some good stories were told.

Well nothing was happening, the wind was not easing, and in fact it was getting stronger. 11.30am we decided that our best option would be to move venue. Graham and Marcus decided to move north the Withernsea beaches. We decided to move down to Spurn Road and try back of the Lighthouse, as this would bring the wind from behind us. At least we would be partially sheltered from that wind.

12 noon and again we were soon casting seaward and with the sea being that much calmer we felt we were in for some good sport. It was not to be, weed weed and more weed. Time was on our side, we had most of the day in front of us, so a break while the tide move further up, was taken.

This would hopefully give the weed time to dissipate. Not so, just before 4pm Milesey said enough is enough, said his good by’s, promised we’d meet up again when the Cod would hopefully show, later in the winter months.

Again the decision was made to move. So up with our tackle we decided to try the riverside just over the bank. Setting up our kit, yet again, we soon had our lines back in the water. There was still two and a half hours too high water, so we could be in with a chance of some Bass!

Skyward watching the tips of our rods, waiting for that knock, the three of us waited in anticipation. Silence a part from the wind and waves knocking the inner side of Spurn. Then my rod twitched, again tap tap, this was it. My mind was racing, with the thought of my first Spurn Road Bass. Yes yes, grabbing my rod I felt the nod, she’s my baby. Retrieving I knew it weren’t going to be a big one, but this was a fish. Landing what turned out to be an Eel, not disappointed, At least I was not to be a blanker today.

Another 15 minutes and I had another, not as big, but this had increased my catch by double.

Dave and Cliff looked on, heads down, there only action was a couple of crabs. 8pm approached, time to call it a day. We had done a 12-hour session, 3 venues, with only 2 slimy Eels to show.

Still happy we had a day’s fishing, we had a 3 hour journey home in front of us.

On way back we had time to plan our next fishing adventure, so weather watching, tides to decide where our next Venue would be.
