Re: absolutely mad Yep, all the fun of my job evaporated overnight back in 1997 when the Health & Safety Act applied to police officers as well. (We were exempt up until then) I became a police officer for the adrenalin rush of doing something for the greater good that may involve risk and danger. Car chases became a real hot potato and even a foot pursuit requires a "constant evaluation of the dynamic risk assessment model" in order to remain safe and comply with the H&S act. It won't be long before it is deemed to dangerous to go out, and we will be confined to the station, sat on the floor as having furniture could provide an avoidable trip hazard. Of course, we will have to find a replacement for the ball point pen, as those things can have your eye out, and our radios will also have to go, as there is a spurious unsubstantiated link to those and cancer. Still, mustn't grumble...... Oh, hi everyone, I do still fish now and again and lurk on here on a daily basis. Cheers, Daz

Re: absolutely mad cheerz dazz, i totally agree there, everyone, every wakeing minute of every day applies the above quote , even if they don't know what it means. from myself at work, to my six year old son before he jumps off the sofa. it just makes my blood boil when government seems to decide that grown, trained men and women are incapeable of makeing decisions regarding their own health and safety based upon their own 'dynamic r/a'. and further more i just cannot fathom why , when someone makes a bad judgement regarding this and an injury results how the hell can it be anyone elses fault bar the person who decided to act upon that judgement. i could go on 4 eva but i just feel a rant comming on so i'll quit now. __________________ beer so many venues, so little time.

Re: absolutely mad h&s gone mad! yet other areas it seems as though it's ignored & falls from working at height is the biggest cause of all work related injuries, whether falling from the bottom rung of a ladder or over 100' up a building. yesterday, mrs asp's uncle who works for an aircraft catering firm fell out of a cargo hold, only about a 5' height, but sprained his ankle & breaking the bones in his hand, wrist & possible ligament & nerve damage, the company policy for loading this particular aircraft is to stand on the carts to climb into the hold, then jump out. unfortunately, he's a rather large chap, which didn't help, but he's got his union onto the case already & after speaking to the company former h&s guy, a risk assessment was carried out for this task, but it seems nothing was implimented & no formal training is carried out for this aircraft either. when loading the planes normally, they have to drive the truck to about 3' away from the plane, get onto the body & elevate to the required height (up to about 35'), lean across the gap, open the door, then slide the gantry into the open doorway ... all without the aid of safety harness & fall restraint lanyard. they had a guy fall off & was off work for 18 months! personally, having been in a job where i worked at height (working with cherry pickers & scissor lifts) up to 145', i learnt all about working at height regulations & had to carry out on site risk assessments prior to carrying out repairs or breakdown of a machine, i'd have refused to carry out the work untill i've seen evidence of a risk assessment & had the required ppe. unfortunately, the catering firm doesn't explain a fraction of what's needed to know when working at height. i'm sure the police motorcyclists would be inteligent enought to be able to decide instantly if they were entering an unsafe situation, just as anyone else properly trained to carryout their work would do. __________________ www.mobilespanner1.co.uk
