| Some time to remember this weekend. I served as a Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Training Branch) officer for a few years as a way of putting something back to the Air Training Corps which I was a cadet in for 7 years. The squadron I served at was based in Cardiff and we often took part in activities with other units in the South Wales area and the wider world. It was with a great deal of personal sadness that I heard the news of the crash at St Athan in which four people died, two of them young cadets (cousins) - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7887689.stm. We, as a society, are quick to condemn young people and it is sad to see that those looking to become good citizens have suffered such a fate during an activity they will have been thoroughly enjoying. I only hope we do not see a knee jerk response to a freak tragedy like this. This in no way diminishes my feelings, I am a father and would support either of my daughters in joining this or most other organised youth groups. I can only imagine the pain of their parents and my heart goes out to them. My thoughts also go to the adult pilots and their families, a loss in service is always hard . I will not be fishing this weekend but will take time to look to the skies and remember. I hope that at least some of you will join me in that act. Thanks all.
