| Newbie needs sea advice Hi All, In early 2012 my partner and I are moving to Cardigan SW Wales, I have been a Course Angler for nearly 40 years, and have been lucky enough to have enjoyed catching most species to specimen size (Carp 28-07,Barbel 13-14 Chub 6-12), but I am an absolute novice when it comes to shore fishing , so I'm looking for any help that the membership can offer me, I have good quality carp and barbel rods up to 3lb tc, (will these be man enough??) I would like to fish for Bass, Mullet,Mackrel and flatfish. I am prepared to invest in more tackle in the future but want to land a few first to see if I get the same enjoyment as I do from course fishing, any advice on tackle, tides, bait, lures, and reading material would be greatly appreciated. | Re: Newbie needs sea advice Hi guy welcome to the forum my friend, are resident experts from wales (MRG LAZY HOOKER ![]() ) will be along to advise you of some lovely spots to fish in south wales soon im sure (along with other members of course )I would suggest that for most fishing your rods will not be "man enough" to cope with the riggours of fishing the coast, however with some calm weather or sheltered bays/harbours etc you may be able to put a small ledger on your rod and fish with light tackle for bass, flatties and Mullet. You may also be able to fish in the summer months with a lure or float for makeral, pollock and garfish but again it really depends on which areas you are looking to fish. In general you need a rod that would be able to cast out at least a 4oz lead + bait for sea angling and also have enough backbone to then be able to retrieve that weight plus fish, possibly some weed through a strong current/swell. Of course you will also need a reel thats upto the job as well, if you have any large pit reels they may be ok to use but I would be consious of what may happen to the internalls apon prolonged contact with salt water. You can of course get yourself a sea rod and reel from the market/ebay for around £30/£50 and start fishing with them. If you find you enjoy it then it warrents upgrading to some better gear if not then you have not wasted to much cash and possibly wrecked a load of nice freshwater gear in the process. Hope this helps a little, im sure others will be along soon to add their thoughts on your question Tight Lines ![]() Joe __________________ Sea 2012- 5brd rockling, whiting, LS Dogfish,Bass,Eel,Flounder F/W 2012- Catfish(16.5lb), Carp,Tench LITTER IS JUST LAZINESS!! |
