Hi all - i'm a new whip/pole user & just attached about 2 foot of #14 pole elastic to the end of the whip (so the elastic is hanging from the end) - i've used very small cable ties to secure the elastic (two ties) then doubled it over & added two more - seems very secure - Anyone see a downside??? i'm a bit reluctant to do much else (like trying to thread it through the top section/s) as the whip only cost a fiver. Kind regards. Martin (new member)

Re: elasticated whip hi martin, welcome, on the tip of the whip should be a small eye, you connect a pole rig to the eye, no elastic required, the idea of a whip is to catch small fish from the margins, as used by match anglers to scratch a few small fish to make a very small weight, for weighing in at the end of the match. they are normally 5mtrs long and telescopic __________________ good luck and tight lines chris lifes to short for animosity.

Re: elasticated whip Hi Chris - thanks for your speedy reply, I'm getting a pole in the near future, which of course i will be using elastic - just thought the elastic on the whip may give me a chance should i hit a "BIG UN" while going for the little un's. I fish a pond just outside wakefield where there's some big fish (carp), but i don't really set my stall out to go for these. A net full of nice roach appeals far more to me (with the occasional donkey thrown in). Look forward to any more help/advice. Thanks. Martin.

Re: elasticated whip a whip will land fish of about a 1lb, slightly more if your very careful. if you connect with a carp of 2lb, you will have great difficulty controling it let alone land it, with what you have. my local carp puddle has carp to 15/20 lb, i have a 13 mtr daiwa pole with no 18 elstic through the top 4 sections, approx 3mtrs elastic, that will be at full stretch with a 6lb carp. just something to think about __________________ good luck and tight lines chris lifes to short for animosity.

Re: elasticated whip Hi chris - thanks for all your help. Can't wait to get the pole, (just started recently realise there must be something to this pole fishing - i'm 54 & been a rod & reel man all my fishing life - so far). In the puddle i fish, the guys are getting the carp VERY close in, - does that then prompt me to buy a MARGIN pole ??. It's more or less the only place i go to fish & it's a great venue (£3 a day or a tenner for the whole season). Maybe you can give me some guidance on getting properly started & buying my first pole (i only want to shell out say £100 max as my 1st love is rod/reel) Whats the difference between a Margin pole & a "NORMAL" pole?? Looking forward to your hearing from you again as you obiously know what your on about. Many thanks. Martin.

Re: elasticated whip hi martin, as chas says, you can cover all situations with a full pole. the cheaper poles tend to be heavier to handle than the more expensive ones. with my pole set up at full length,i need both hands to control it, my other half has a 11mtr pole, which she can use with 1 hand,(second hand from a good friend) my advice would be, firstly go to the tackle shop, ask them if its possible to try out a few poles, feel for the length/weight ratios,(at full distance) then the price, then compromise on all three. this will give you great satisfaction, knowing what you can handle comfortably and at what length, then you will make the right choice, from doing just that. if the shop price is more than you can manage, maybe look for a second hand one, the same model etc as the shop. ref your puddle try getting a life permit, its terrific value. hope this helps __________________ good luck and tight lines chris lifes to short for animosity.

Re: elasticated whip Thanks Chris - ill do just that. Just got in from work been to indian with my work mates (none of whom fish - although i've told them " FISHIN'S THE BEST FUN YOU CAN HAVE WHILE STILL KEEPIN' YOUR CLOTHES ON". I'll go to my local tacle shop (Tackle 2U.com) which is just up the road from me. Apparently one of the guys who works there is something of a pole expert, so will hopefully be able to help me make the right choice. Have a look @ the site as i believe they do mail order & have some great bargains (may also be cheaper being in the north & you'll have heard how we Yorkshire men are with our money) Thanks again & also tight lines to you. Martin.
