Dover cod fishing

Went fishing for the 1st time ever. Absolutely no clue, bought a couple of rods in Dover and between 3 of us caught 54 Mackerel on the pier, chuffed to say the least. Must say, fellow experienced anglers on the day were extremely helpful in showing us how to use our rod and catch fish!!! Want to go a bit further and try for cod. Can anyone help with best time of year to go n how to go about catching decent size cod, i.e. Bait type, rod type, etc. As you can guess. I haven't a clue, thanks in advance.

Re: Dover cod fishing

using the same tactics and the same gear off the pier will still give yo ua good chance of catching cod . we are getting close to the cod season and the only difference is you will need bigger stronger hooks and big fat juicy baits to attract the fish in .. whole squid - big lugworm baits - peeler crab all work .
check through the posts in the catch reports form the area - there are loads of guys on here who fish that area week in week out

Re: Dover cod fishing

Hi mate fished in Dover for many years, the admiralty pier this the best, need to be on the second half past the cafe, It can be very hard to fish so really you need to experience the fist half first, and understand the tides, 8oz gemini yellow head fixed wire lead is essential, this should hold the bottom at high tide, best to go at night, after strong winds, the pier is open all night Fri & Sat, Whole squid on a flowing pennel, will catch cod, and try sticky blacks as well, they stay on the line better than lug worm.
I am fishing this Saturday night as there has been a few good reports this week,
good luck and happy fishing
JCC

Re: Dover cod fishing

Nice one JCC, looking to head down next Friday n will certainly follow the tips I received so far. Desperate for that first cod, was down there a couple of weeks ago n only managed whiting but big surprise was a lobster which the miss us was pleased with when I got home. I guess that now justifies another visit to the missus!
