Re: Never fished before - want to start!

Hi - & welcome to the forum. 1st job when float fishing is to PLUMB the depth, that is using a plummet which is a lead weight with a piece of cork glued in the end to which you stick th point of the hook in. (but some are spring loaded)
1) attach your chosen float to the line with NO split shot if float is attached TOP & BOTTOM or just one shot either side of the float if attached tp bottom ring only (waggler style)
2) Slide the float up the line a few feet (guesswork) & attach the plummet to the hook length.
3) Cast in to the place you want to fish - if the float lies flat then the float is set too deep, so shorten the float to hook length & cast again - if float sinks - it's set too shallow - Keep adjusting the float up & down the line till the float SITS UP with about an inch of the tip is showing. This is a good start point so you know where the lake/river bed is. Remove the plummet & shot the float till it sits so the float sits so you can see it (about 1/2")
Remember the depth may vary alot even in the same area so adjustments need to be made. (by re-plumming)
Some fish feed mid water @ times though & sometimes near the surface all isn't CARVED IN STONE.
I make a mental note (having 1st plummed the depth) of where the float is from the reel position to one of the rod rings so when i shorten the depth @ some stage, i can go back to fishing near the bottom without re-plumming. Hope this helps a bit - You can fish from cradle to grave & still have a lot to learn.
Good Luck
Martin.

Yep! Looks like a roach and that's what so many of us Piscine obsessed buggers started with it's unreal. Welcome to the enriched life that includes fishing :)

Re: Never fished before - want to start!

Most of us experienced maggot drowners will already know this, but as you're new to the the game you probably won't :-
Don't buy ALL your floats with RED/ORANGE tips
You may be surprised to learn that BLACK tipped floats show up better in bright/sunny conditions. These are easier on the eye & cause less glare/dazzle when fishing a long session (i've no problem using them in any conditions personally).
p.s a black waterproof felt tip pen can be used on the as a quick solution on the bank.
Good luck & tight lines.
