| Re: new too fishing Hello bakerperch93, and welcome to the forum. As scottish_and_mental said boldbear is your man, but you will get help from everyone on this forum, we all learn from others. With bait prices apparantly set to rise by 30%, you need to keep in mind that nearly all baits can be made at home or replaced with a suitable alternative. Particle baits (hemp / bird seeds etc) will still have to be bought, but things like pellets, boillies, pastes and dips can all be home made. What you need to be though is adventurous in your thinking. Many many years ago I caught my PB common carp of 19lb 4oz on a lump of Soreen malt loaf. I currently often use Marmite cheeses, with an added dip straight into a jar of Marmite. This has produced some good Chub and the odd Barbel. Spam type meat can be purchased and spiced up for say £1.50 a tin, instead of Dynamites own meat at £8!!!!! My last batch of home made boillies cost me £2 for 2 kilo's. You look at the tackle shop prices and do the maths. Just look in the cupboard at home and take it from there, the guys on here have the recipes you need. Don't get me wrong, I still buy occasional pellets and boillies, and of course the hemp, but this is usually only down to lack of time available to knock them up, the majority of what I use is still from the kitchen, to my wife's great disgust. Good luck, and do let us know how you get on. Tight lines John __________________ Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day, Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. Anyway a little off topic, welcome to the forum. As the boys say most baits can be sourced from the cupboard. Personally I fish for pike mainly and try to catch mackerel from the shore to stock the freezer ready for the dead baiting season. Even with the price of fuel now its cheaper to drive to the beach rather than pay tackle shop prices for frozen baits! |

| Re: new too fishing Welcome mate , good baits to try are the good old traditonal baits, besides maggots i can highly recomend bread, either uncut or better still blue warburtons sliced bread, it makes great easy to use flakes, a size 18 or 16 (even bigger) hook with a a flake pinched on and you will get a good choice of fish, bigger baits gets bigger fish, tighter you pinch the bread on the more it sinks quickley. Also try sweet corn, i must say though that the more expencive corn is best IMO than the cheaper brands. Luncheon meat, cornbeef, prawns are great for tench and can be got fairly cheap in bulk and can be frozen if not already done. As barbus maximus says, just raid your cupboards at home for good baits, dig worms early in the morning to get some good perch and tench, i used to poor soapy water over the area to be dug, it could be old wifes tail but by eck we got them to come up. Good rigs to try for beard and corn is the LIFT RIG, if you can master that you will get some good fish, i swear by the rig and have had all fish from a few ounce roach to 15ld carp and all bottom feaders inbetween. Price wise a days fishing can be done for around £4 with the above baits What tackle have you got to fish with? wayne ![]() |

| Re: new too fishing Try finding a damp corner of the garden, and drop something like a bin lid, or old mat on the ground and see what you have after 4-5 days. If you get the little brown slugs (about 10-15 mm long) keep them especially for the Chub. You should get worms congrigate in any damp dark area.
