Re: new fisherman in portsmouth

Hi Nath,
try over at by the lifeoboat station at hayling for some massive smoothounds !
only fish on the low about 1 hourbefore the ebb and 2 after ..
Hardbacks work just as well as peeler mate

Re: new fisherman in portsmouth

Welcome to the forum. As far as I know there are a few from your neck of the woods on here. Can't really help much though as I don't think I can remember fishing that side of the solent.

Tight lines!

"would like to get into something bigger and something different than bass!"

Don't want much do you :-)
Smoothounds it is then, they are very common around the Solent from May untill about the end of July, you will still get them later on but not so much the big females.
Try crab bait (hardback and peeler) at Warsash, Hill Head, Gillkicker, Hayling, sandy point, Selsey etc and you should get them.
Or you could fish big Macky and squid baits and target big Bass?
Good luck.

For the smutts use normal beach gear but up your end tackle, pully rig, 40-50lb snoods, 2/0-3/0 wide gape hook.
As for the Bass, big squid or macky bait fished close in but differnt venues.

If your in pompey and looking for smoothies, get to south parade pier straight of the end nice distance cast you be in the clean channel that runs through there. Peeler crab works well as does hard. Hope this helps
