| Hello everyone.need help choosing first rod. Hi, just started fishing and i need help buying equipment. i've been looking on the net for days but theres just so many choices out there. i was taught on a pole but they seem too expensive for me so im looking for a cheaper rod that i could use a similar method with. i.e a float. i was catching small roach/bream and bigger fish like tench and carp up to 15lb. i have about 100 pound sterling (the currency sign on my keyboard doesn't work) Thanks guys. |

| Re: Hello everyone.need help choosing first rod. Hi , I agree great bargains are to be had from boot sales but do check items very carefully for damage , especially to the rings . I've had good rods from E-bay but again there is an element of risk . buying from a good tackle shop where you can get advice and handle the rods before buying is the sure way to get something you'll be happy with but perhaps not the cheapest . You'll never find one rod that will be excellent for all your needs & a side effect of a serious fishing addiction is an ever growing collection of rods for different circumstances . Therefore I recommend you spend your money wisely & get a good quality rod that you will use for years to come . A good float rod also called a match rod of around 12' will always be a staple of your fishing for smaller species up to around 6 lb . Barbel rods are also great for big chub, tench & carp under 20lb but overpowered for silver fish , most come with a two tips for different styles of fishing . I think one of each of these two rods would be a good start & if you shop around £100 will get you both . One other option on the lighter side would be the John Wilson Avon Quiver which like most barbel rods gives you one tip for float fishing & a quiver tip for ledgering (Fullcreel has one of these & seems happy with it ). Good luck & don't forget to check out the buying & selling section of this forum . |
