Hello to everyone on this forum. I am completely new to fishing, well saying that I always had a go when I was a kid, but with a stick and a bent paperclip for a hook.

I recently went to visit family in India and before flying over, my cousin asked me to bring a fishing rod. Well a dear close friend of mine at work offered me a rod from the many he already had. I was supposed to go fishing with my close friend, but , unfortunately he passed away suddenly.

My first go at fishing was in India on the River Ganges. Iwas in India for three months and only caught ONE fish during the many times I tried. It was a small Mahseer, probably 14 inch long. Never caught anything after that and I think it was to do with the bait and choice of location.

Thing is I am going again on the 17th of January and I will be posting a few threads for help. Thanks for reading and lets see what the future holds.

Re: New Member

Hi pal, I will let you know how I get on when I am in India. I frequently use the internet cafes that are easily accessible there and I will keep you updated. This time I am taking more gear with me. I have: 5 rods, two are new and 3 are second hand (excellent condition), keep net, lures (numerouse bought of ebay), brolly, tackle boxes (these are my old tool organisers but do the job, a few fishing magazines with helpful bait tips and silly as it sounds, but I have a Stanley tool box with wheels that I have painted Camouflage colours to hold everything except the rods, also the tool box doubles as a seat.

The place in India I went to last time I was there was the river Ganges which flows through my parents home village which is 100km east of New delhi and comes under the State of Uttar Pradesh. During the time I spent there, local village people told me about some local fishermen who only go fishing at night and me and my cousin tracked one of these fishermen down close by and he told use that they fish at night because the fisg are more active there and we could not believe how big the fish they catch are, when he told us using his arms spanned out to describe the size.

To be honest I was tempted to go fishing at night, but was advised not to do so by family and locals as I am unfamiliar with the rough terrain in the dark and as some of the areas are off the beaten track, although totally safe in the day with the amount of people at the rivers edge, farming, fishing, bringing cattle to drink and so forth, at night it was different and certain areas where Lawless (the time when local bandits operated) and even the police did not go there at night. So I will only be going during the day.

I was also supposed to go to India in August/September of 2009, but was unable to as my cousin is friends with a group who organise local fishing events or something on those lines. I will find more out when I go this month and will post info here.

Re: New Member

youie that would be brilliant if you could keep me up to date with your trip (i am very jeleous) i have a friend in india near the ganges i will try to find out exactly where abouts, i hate flying myself so have never been out of england so i live my holidays threw others like yourself. i hope you hook into one of them monsters. i understand what you say about night fishing, but it is understandable the fish are a little shy with all the activity happening during the day. do be carfull if there are bandits about no fish is worth you getting hurt even the realy big one. i would be more worrid about the wildlife (snakes etc) myself. i look forward to hearing from you soon.

Re: New Member

Hi River Man, My cousin and I always had a friend who was an expert when it came to navigating jungle terrain, so snakes and other wildlife was not a problem. Most snakes we encountered would quickly disappear into the undergrowth as they shy away from danger rather than confront it. We did however encounter a complete bare leafless tree and we counted close to 40 large Bee Hives on this tree, so we had to go a different way round. I am going to video quite a bit this time, as my mums home in the village is by the lake and we can fish off the roof top. I will video it this time.
