Hi all, My wife, son and I are very new to fishing. In fact we have only fished for 3 days but have really been bitten by the bug..... Obviously with any new sport the learning curve is steep, but we are confident there are many out there willing to pass on hints and tips. Our fishing expeditions to date have been off one of the piers at Weymouth and from the beach at Mudeford. We favour the latter because it is closer and the amenities are nearer. We are considering going night fishing at Mudeford and would like to know what advice you have i.e. favoured tide conditions, best time, what baits / rigs (target is Bass). We would really appreciate your help, advice and support. Thanks all, The Learner

Re: Hello and help Good point. I suppose this shows how much I don't know and need to understand. If this isn't to be the case what would you consider worth aiming for this time of year?

Re: Hello and help Flatties, whiting, pouting the odd codling is what i go for around winter, best baits round here seem to be lug, rag and squid. Rig i use is a 2 or 3 hook paternoster I do think there's a few bass around places, so you could get some, maybe chuck out a whole calamari squid and see what you get __________________ Dan `·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸ Big or small, look after them all! ¸.·´¯`·.¸ ><((((º>

| Re: Hello and help If you are that new to sea fishing then I can safely assume that you are not aware of what any fishing rig terma mean. Can I suggest you go to these 2 sites for a more informed idea of both fish & knot methods to use to catch them. http://www.sea-fishing.org/modules.p...=Fish_Pictures http://www.sea-fishing.org/modules.p...=Fishing_Knots Hopefully these will be of help. | Re: Hello and help Thanks a lot mate, we really appreciate your guidance. Not wishing to take too much advantage of your good nature but we believe that the best time to go is after high tide. Would you agree. |

Re: Hello and help welcome to the forum learner, you have picked the right place for advice mate, firstly, apart from the odd venue the bass season is more or less over,i'm not familiar with your area but this time of year your sport will be mainly restricted to codling, whiting and flats. night fishing is generally better sport because the fish come in closer under cover of darkness, but, what you have to think about is that everything is a little more difficult at night, bite detection, baiting up,knot tying and casting will all be a little more difficult. don't forget lighting, you will need to be able to see when you bait up and watch for bites, headlamps and parrafin lamps are used mostly. the last thing i want to do is put you off night fishing,it's great fun,you just need to be aware of the differences between day and night fishing. having said that, everyone here will help in every way we can, don't be afraid to ask whatever question you might have,no matter how silly it might sound,we all had to learn. there is an excellent site you can visit that will be extremely helpful,it has been set up by one of our fellow forum members -simon torbay fishing,i'm sure when he sees this he will post a link for you. in the meantime, best of luck

Re: Hello and help Hello mate from another Andovarian (well someone has to live there) Avon beach right next to mudeford is not a bad little beach, its fairly shallow but you should get plenty of flounder and bass rockling and pout. But i would still try a bit of spinning with ragworm on the hooks in the Mudeford run on the Quay. This is the fast bit of water on the side of the Quay. There should still be plenty of Bass along this bit. If you want to fish closer to home though i would head for Hythe marina and fish off the wall there, its near Southampton. I havnt been for a few weeks but have been informed of a few big fat flounder are being caught on ragworm. Back to Avon beach (Mudeford) at night though i think ragworm on a three hook flapper will be about your best bet. It normally fishes about 2 hours before high tide and 2 hours after high. Just watch out for the weed as it can get bad. Also watch out for the closing times on the car parks coz some will lock you in.
