New to Fishing - New to this site. Hopefully it'll all be worthwile

Hi there everyone. Always fancied fishing but never had the time. Bought myself a rod the other day but didn't realise how complicated a "hobby" this would be. The rod i bought is an 8' spinning rod which says 10-30g. I have no idea what this rod is capable of or suitable for. Ive scoured the interweb and still not found anything decisive on where/what/when/how i should go about fishing so if anyone could be of any help it'd be greatly appreciated. Live in the paisley area so if anyone knows this area even better.

Thanks in advance.

(Ps the usernames got nothing to do with an actual salmon.Years ago everything i tried to get for my email address was taken and i ended up picking 2 random words and its just stuck)

hi slap,

what kind of fishing are you looking to do? for example the rod you've got is ok for boat fishing (so long as you aren't going to try to pull in a 59lb cod), spinning or even dropping down the side of a pier. I will be no good for beach casting or any long distance casting. the weight rating

have you got a reel yet? this can be even more of a minefield, not to mention the type of line, baits, rigs hook sizes (i could go on but wont)

you really need to make the decision if you want to sea fish, course/game fish, fly fish (fresh/salt) etc. reading through this forum should help you make your mind up. BTW, if you are thinking of fishing on inland rivers etc, get you license.

Thumbs up Re: New to Fishing - New to this site. Hopefully it'll all be worthwile

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking probably rivers and have looked into permits
.

would my rod bring in a decent size fish, well decent size for fish in a river or even a pike?i know you need wire trace for pike,i just dont want to go and snap my rod. Also the rod came with a reel. okuma razor 40 it is. I dont know if its any good but id imagine it'd do me as a beginner.

as for hooks bait etc the guy in the local tackle shop was quite helpful and gave me an assortment of hooks a few spinners, split shot, swivels and weights etc and i bought a few lures from ebay. would my rod and reel be suitable for float/bait fishing or using lures?

Like i said im a complete novice lol The weight rating you mentioned, thats the 10-30g does that mean that whatever rig i have on the end of my line should be between 10-30g?

Sorry for the millions of questions. I'm sure ill get it soon.

Thanks for your help.
