Re: Bobby Sparkler, Wharncliffe Fly Fisher Hi Bobby Sparkler, I fish at Scout Dike, which has just closed for the winter season, and would you believe it, it's full of rainbow trout! I've eaten loads of them over the last season. I haven't tried fly fishing yet, I got back into fishing last year after a 25 year gap and I've stayed with bait, mainly casters, apart from having a go at spinning. Next year I'll try the fly. Warncliffe looks a lovely venue. Have you tried Moorhead reservoir, it seems to be a favourite of local fly men? I fish on the Don around Thurgoland, plenty of trout, grayling, some chub, and perch. A mate of mine caught a small barbel in Outibridge, there are bream too, apparently.

Re: Bobby Sparkler, Wharncliffe Fly Fisher Nice to hear about Scout Dike, I never got round to fishing it. I think Wharncliffe is great value when you can fish every day of the year for £225, possibly going up to £250. I have caught plenty of fish as well as my share of blanks after returning to fly fishing after a gap of 38 years. Ron is hoping to set up a website in the near future so look out for that. Might meet you there one day.

Re: Bobby Sparkler, Wharncliffe Fly Fisher Hi Ron I'm sure you'll enjoy it up there. They're mostly a good bunch of lads and I certainly get my moneys worth of enjoyment out of fishing there. Look forward to seeing you soon. I drive a dark green Mitsubishi Shogun, so if that's there I'll be there too. Bob __________________ http://www.flyfishingwharncliffe.co....home&Page=home

Re: Bobby Sparkler, Wharncliffe Fly Fisher I like these old reservoirs built in the Victorian period with brick and shovel. Wharncliffe is one such water. I seem to remember walking around the place way back in 1970 when I was on holiday in England. My home was 6000 miles away then. The other old reservoirs I have fished have been Thrybergh of course, Press Manor near Chesterfield and Ogston. But I've fished most of England's reservoirs including Ladybower, Rutland, Grafham, Hanningfield and Draycote. For nearly 3 years I virtually lived on Draycote - a great water. I got to learn every inch of that ressie. My favourite: Of the big reservoirs it has to be Rutland. Everytime you set off across that water you feel you are chartering new ground, it's so huge. But locate some overwintered fish and it's magic. But the smaller waters are nice and intimate and can hold some cracking fish, especially the odd brown. There is a big brown that inhabits the western shore of Press Manor. The last time I caught it, it would have gone at least 6 lbs, but these fish have to be released and mucking about with them on the bank is not on.

| Re: Bobby Sparkler, Wharncliffe Fly Fisher Hi Ron You sound as though you've led an interesting life, not like me, although I did fish Draycote once and used to fish Ladybower before I stopped fishing for my 38 year break. I have been to Wharncliffe today in the freezing fog but was fortunate enough to catch 4 fish in 2 hours, using my least favourite method, i.e. an egg fished under an indicator. It seems to be the best way of catching fish at the moment, but they'll soon be catchable by more traditional methods, and the sooner the better. We get some good sport on the top at times and this is my favourite way of catching. Hope to see you up there soon. Happy New Year. | Re: Bobby Sparkler, Wharncliffe Fly Fisher I am waiting for a bit of mild weather - next week at sometime they say. Then I will be off to Wharncliffe to suss it out. I am looking forward to that. The recent death of my father at the age of 91 has changed my priorities somewhat over recent days. Yes Bobby, I have been lucky having fished in may countries of the world, mainly in Africa. In March I am going for 2 months to Australia to see my son married. He is an Australian citizen now. It's alway nice to catch trout off the top. I love the hawthorne fly time and Wharncliffe looks to have a few hawthorn bushes around it. |
