Total newbie. Looking for help, advice and decent locations on south devon coast. Hello, I started this thread the other night, I'll paste it here as well, Thanks to Greenheart for his advice. Can't wait to get my 1st rod and reel tomorrow :) Help for a complete newbie :) Hello :) I am making a visit to Exeter Angling center on thursday to talk to the guys there about starting beach fishing, I have never fished before so I am complete newbie. I've been searching this site for a few hours now and the info on here is great :) I'd like a bit of advice though. I live in Exeter and would like to start fishing off of Teignmouth, Dawlish, Exmouth etc, etc. I'd like to know some other good spots or if the above mentioned places are worth traveling to or should I try somewhere like Jacobs ladder ? What could I expect to catch off of teignmouth (if anything ?!) I really am a total newbie so any advice would be great. What are the best times to go fishing ? Is it as easy as casting the line and reeling it in ? ( i doubt it is !!!) Are there any good guides on this site that I could read about my local area's beach fishing ? Thanks in advanced Leigh

Re: Total newbie. Looking for help, advice and decent locations on south devon coast. Hi Leigh, and welcome to the Forum. You will get a huge amount of advice hopefully from the lads and lasses on here, and there are a few who are in the Exmouth/Torbay area that should be able to give you some pointers. I have to say, that the 3 or 4 questions you asked towards the end of your post could take up pages of discussion, with no definative answer. Your best bet is local knowledge for the particular stretch of coast you decide to fish, and that could vary a couple of miles either side of it as well. Some beaches fish well on two hours either side of high tide, others on low tide, some at dawn some at dusk etc etc. The only way to find out is speak to people who are fishing where you want to go, or by trial and error. As for Teignmouth, very good for bass by the river mouth. Live sandeel sold on the river side of the beach will catch them but again time, effort and luck all play a huge part in it all. As for techniques, again, it depends on what rod you decide to buy ie beach caster or spinning rod. "HOPEFULLY" the tackle shop will ask you lots of questions about what you want to do, and will supply you with the right gear. Be careful though, they may (I dont know Exeter Tackle) sell you something totally inappropriate purely because they need to shift it. If you have a mate who fishes try and get them to go with you. Well, I said loads without really saying anything, but don't be in too much of a rush to part with your money until you know exactly what you want from this fantastic sport. All the best, and good luck Regards, Darren

Re: Total newbie. Looking for help, advice and decent locations on south devon coast. Hi Leigh, Welcome to the Forum, I live in Bridport, but unfortunately am a charter fisher. No doubt some of the beach casters will be in contact with lots of advice and information. Regards Drew __________________ All that Glitters is not Gold Secretary of The Blandford Sea Angling Club

Re: Total newbie. Looking for help, advice and decent locations on south devon coast. Good luck Leigh. I have just had a break down that way & thoroughly enjoyed the fishing. The one bit of advice I would give, is to practise tying knots at home. Then practise some more & a bit more. Never settle for second best when you tie your own. It may sound a bit basic but if that fish gets away because your knot has come undone There are plenty of links on the site to knot tying guides. __________________ Spahill <:--- --- --- --- It was this big --- --- --- ---:>
