have been reading a clubs catch reports during a cod fishing trip outta Swansea. They have had huge success fishing a method which has been superbly explained on their website. I have quoted the main details below but in fairness for using their text here is their website The Cavaliers Sea Angling Club

''Although we did manage to get some fresh Black and Blow Lug it didnÕt work very well. The three biggest Cod all fell to very large Squid baitÕs. Upto 9 Calamari on a pennel rig consisting of 6 feet of 100 LB nylon with a single hook dropper half way, then some telephone wire and eight beadÕs split in half by a booby-bead, 4-5 inches after the dropper and pennel rig attached to the end. HookÕs 4-6/O Cox and Rawle uptide extraÕs. Get two squid and place them together side by side, then sew them together using the trace repeat this with another four squid. So you now have six squid on your trace, get 3-4 squid and hook them through the middle on the bottom hook (Isle of Wight style). Work all the squid back down the trace so they are tight to the bottom hook. The worm has worked for some of the smaller Cod but the big squid baitÕs have took the best Cod and big Whiting on the down-tider on the last two tripÕs. One uptider loaded up with fresh black lug all day, took Dogfish and small Whiting. Maybe it was just the mark we were fishing? Make sure you vary your size of your lead through the tide''

For your information they used Uptiders but fished downtide off the back of the boat, trotted downtide approx 30yds. THis method has provided them with a lot of double figure cod nd outfished black lug and uptide methods on numerous trips (see their catch reports and look back to Jan/Feb time (when Swansea Cod fishing is at its best!!)
