| A not so new newbie Hi everyone, Well a little about me then. I started fishing when I was about 12 and fished just about every weekend since for all the usual species until I was 23. During that time I ended up buying multiple rods (2 float, 2 quiver, 2 carp, 1 pole, 1 whip) and countless reels and more tackle than I could even carry. Although as I got older I try to target specific species (Tench, Bream and big Roach being my favorites) I could never resist the urge just to put a couple of maggots on a size 18 hook under my favorite float and just see what would bite, often this was just tiny roach but sometimes I got lucky and hit bigger stuff. My biggest problem at that time was that I lived in London and didn't drive which meant getting to many places was simply impossible with the amount of gear that we all take with us. Because of this and because many of the waters in the South London area where either poor stocked, had problems with kids chucking stones etc, or were so over fished that fish were at best wise to all baits and rigs or at worse where battered with missing scales, fin damage or diseased that I started to feel less inclined to go fishing and so ended up going less and less until I completely stopped. Until yesterday I hadn't gone fishing for 10 years! All my gear was still in my loft having been moved from house to house numerous times (I just couldn't bare parting with it) and last week I decided to check it all out to see what had rotted, rusted and broke. I was amazed to find that it was virtually all intact! My landing net and weigh sling had been ravaged by moths and one really cheap and crap reel I had had a faulty spring in the bail arm so that it wouldn't spring back when you reeled in but other than that everything was exactly as I had left it! I now live in West Sussex and joined the Pulborough Angling Society (PAS) which finally, after over 20 years, has given me access to the kind of waters that I had always wanted to fish so yesterday, after spending a small fortune on new line, new landing net, new reel, hooks, bait and my license for the PAS I took my first fishing trip in 10 years to Goose Green. What a fantastic time I had! I was worried that I would have forgotten how to do it all, would I be able to tie hooks, could I remember shotting patterns etc etc but so much of it came flooding back and within 2 casts I was pinpoint accurate again and left after catching a number of Crucians, Bream and Roach. Weight wise none of them were anything to write home about, just a few ounces each, but they were a great way to blow 10 years worth of cobwebs from my brain. Only trouble is now that I just want to go everyday! |
