Question Mullett Float Fishing - Methods

Hi Guys,

I may have an opportunity to go float fishing for Mullett soon.

I was just wondering....what is the "ultimate" float fishing method. I have a Specimen Match Rod for Waggler fishing for Carp and a Shimano reel.

But as always the question is........., what set up would I use in a Marina environment fishing with bread?
Do you set up to fish on the Bottom or mid water?

Any help would be appreciated from you Mulletteers out there.

Re: Mullett Float Fishing - Methods

well not sure i should offer help so you can gain MORE points ...hehe

but if its any help to you mate the best way to fish torquay harbour and surrounding area is float fish the bottom and the way i do it and found to work really well in the past couple years is fish it like you would for tench and fish for the lift bites because although mullet are bottom feeders as soon as they find food they lift it up of the bottom and hang there in the water chewing it...

i use 4lb berkley vanish size 10 hook and a smallish float 4bb something like that depending on how close in or far out i need to fish and the wind....

then really hard to explain this.. but i would set up my float and add split shot until the float first "cocks" then that last split shot i have added (in my mind the one that makes the float cock) i put a inch from my hook the rest i leave 4ft away possibly more. so that as soon as the mullet picks up the lump of bread it lifts that bottom split shot and the float lays flat.

Re: Mullett Float Fishing - Methods

That's great advice Dave! Thanks!
Can you tell a bit more about how to bait the area and how to bait the hook?
I think it is not allowed to fish in the harbour between the boats. Where in the harbour I can fish this method and what time of the day and tide?
Thank you!

Cool Re: Mullett Float Fishing - Methods

Cheers Dave,

Some great info there. I see what you mean by the "lift" float method, I used to use that to catch Tench and stonking Bream a few years ago. I guess groundbating with Bread and stuff in an old Sprout or Onion net over the side would be OK?

Again many thanks to the Record Golden Grey Mullett holder!!

Any news on that Certificate etc?

Cheers Dave
