Groundbait for mullet......

There are plenty of mullet ,cruising the docks around Penarth and Barry.

Anybody got any tips on the best groundbait mix, and frequency of baiting , is it best to groundbait a few days before fishing a spot to draw the mullet into the area. Should you bait the area while your fishing or will this spook the fish.

Hi , ive always been told the best thing is to hang a mesh bag [ like you get oranges in ] filled with sliced bread down in the water,or roll up lots of bread balls really small and keep throwing them in , obviously this is if you have breadflake on the hook.......hope this helps.....mac

Re: Groundbait for mullet......

I use small mesh bags, filled with minced fish(mackers/sardines/herrings normally) and breadcrumbs/bran,soaked with pilchard oil.
I put a weight in the bag to get it to the bottom. This creates a great slick, and usually makes a difference to if I catch or not....

Hi, I've fished for mullet on numerous occasions and have usually used liquidised bread. Feed a loaf of cheap sliced bread through a liquidiser, I normally do two loaves and freeze prior to going. Take a bucket with you and add just add sufficient water to the get the bread to stick into a ball, then add two small sachets of cat food(yes this does work) to the mix. Pre baiting over a few days before will help, but when you are ready to fish start by loading in a quarter of the ground bait to your fishing area. This will draw in the fish and start them feeding. Use a light sliding float, waggler type and about 4 to 6lb line with the hook length in flouro carbon line with a 12 or 14 size hook, vary the size of bread flake on the hook as sometimes they want a large lump sometimes a small pinch. Each cast use a handfull of groundbait around the float. Try this if it doesn't work varying depths until they start biting.
