| 4 Sessions Four session reports in one for this blog….doing my bit to save energy ;D At the end of last week I had received my new reel in the post – Shimano Rarenium 2500 – for which I was tempted, nay seduced, to acquire. I was itching to see it perform…and light as a feather, even compared to the Stradic 2500. I was given a weekend pass by the boss, so long as I did a family breakfast on Sunday. So Saturday morning I was up bright-eyed-and-bushy-tailed …and outta the door before 7am. I arrived to a very very low water spring tide at the slipway. There I got chatting to a yachtie – who was intrigued by the thin rods I was assembling – so I explained what I was up to and pointed out the Mullet scrapes in the nearby mud…… and as if on cue a Mullet boiled about 15 foot away… but try as I did it wasn't for catching; so on to my 1st venue…… The first ‘mark’ has become one of my favourite ‘ledger sites’ and it was quite productive. Unfortunately I lost more Mullet than I was able to land; perhaps just luck on the day, or as a consequence of the fish being able to get purchase on the bait cages and throw the hooks. I perhaps need to revise the style of bread cages I’m using, or at least experiment. ![]() ![]() With more Bass than Mullet showing I decided to move on. The next site produced the chubbiest fish I have caught this year…little porker…..and the first for my Rarenium….christened in true form ![]() ![]() Then it was on – in to the rain - to another site that fishes well on the falling tide. I managed one reasonable scrapper before the water was too low. ![]() Next it was a quick pontoon session …on my way back to the slip…producing a small fish ![]() Next day I didn’t get out of the house until midday…after the family leisurely breakie. I decided to take a day off hunting larger fish and went Numbers Fishing…. Seemed like a good idea…. Nice weather and a total of nine Mullet landed. Nothing special on the sizes; except one reasonable fish http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...IMG0019-10.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...RIMG0022-6.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...RIMG0023-6.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...RIMG0026-5.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...RIMG0030-4.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...RIMG0032-3.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...RIMG0036-4.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...RIMG0038-7.jpg With the weekend behind me I checked the forecast for the week…trying to plan my first String Ray session …… but the winds are atrocious all week. Monday was clearly the calmest day, so I persuaded the missus to let me go fishing last night…as my only session this week. It was a good shout…… with a stunning fight – in shallow water – from this nice 6Lb 10oz lump; with distinctive tail damage (2nd picture) ![]() http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...RIMG0042-5.jpg The wind was too strong for most of the sites I would liked to have visited, but the first fish had made the session worth while. En-route back to the slipway I stopped off to fish a more sheltered mark and managed two tiddlers http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...RIMG0044-4.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...RIMG0045-4.jpg Well that was meant to be me grounded now until the weekend; but tonight the weather was forecast to be clearing and my wife watches all of her soap operas on a Tuesday evening ! So yesterday I managed my 4th trip in 4 days.... awesome ;D I stopped off at a spot that I have passed numerous times and never fished. Twice before I had fished nearby and not had a sniff from a fish...so I didn't expect much from this spot either....big mistake....WRONG ! The fish seemed to ignore the bread until about 30 minutes after high; when suddenly you'd think they were starving. One after another they queued to be caught. Nothing big, but everyone of them a plump 4Lber. The only way to tell them apart tjough seemed to be fin damage. No1 had a split tail, No2 a split pectoral fin and No3 was fin perfect...and maybe a few ounces heavier. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...IMG0047jpg.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...IMG0050jpg.jpg ![]() Oh and the Rarenium is now ‘glued’ to my main rod…. A lovely bit of kit. |

| Re: 4 Sessions Thanks guys.... you would never have guessed that I am a little obsessed with them Lets hope the weekend has some rod-bending action. But the forecast certainly isn't light-line friendly; let alone any offshore adventures. Big tides and strong wind...yuck ! |

| Re: 4 Sessions Some smashing fish there - well done I an relatively new to mullet fishing but am putting in the time and getting a few on ledger and float (Clyde area) Was wondering what breaking strain / type of line do you use I am on 0.13 fluorocarbon which is fine on the float cos I am always in control but sometimes I get an istant hit and break on the ledger so am moving up to 10 Lb whiplash braid Any advice well appreciated Thanks Peter ![]() |

| Re: 4 Sessions Quote:
I don't like the concept of creating a weak point, by having fluro tippets. That said I have heard loads of guys state that they don't get breaks on mixed lines. So no definitive answer. But I have never had a Mullet break me off on a hit or constant pull. Straight through fluro is like one giant elastic band; paired with an all-through anti-lock rod and your losses should be minimal I bought my fluro on a bulk spool (1750 yards)....certainly pays to buy large spools ![]() |
