| Mullet Antics A catch up on my Mullet since I last posted ...… sorry its been so long I have been exploring loads of new marks and at one very shallow site I found some nice sized fish but like all positives this site proved extremely difficult to approach and even harder to fish. The weed was a major hazard and even if I could hook a fish the chances of landing it seemed slim. It wasn’t until my third visit to the venue that I finally managed to get a fish hooked. It immediately ran for deeper water and picked up the inevitable weed. But thankfully the line cut through some of the weed, allowing me to get control of the play and bring it to the net. Although this isn’t the biggest fish from the pack it was very welcome; and I can’t wait to get back there and try again. ![]() After taking the fish above I prefer to leave a site to settle for a day or two before returning, so the next evening (Wednesday) I returned to a familiar venue that produces the odd decent fish. It was hard going though and took the best part of two hours effort to get the fish feeding. A great fight from this mid-range fish.... a good evening ![]() The next new site produced two mid-range fish, but I haven’t written it off yet and another visit or two will be on the cards. ![]() ![]() On Sunday (few weeks back now) I did my first trip to the River Beaulieu … not an angler friendly place that’s for sure. I was immediately turfed off one mark after another…..bird sanctuaries, private marsh, private landing, not welcome ….oh and £5 charge for a day-ticket…… You get the idea. Still one good thing about having an entire fleet of Harbour Master launches is that the Bass & Mullet are pretty much un-exploited by commercial netters…. Well almost; I did notice one dory at Bucklers Hard loaded with gillnets !!!! bet he doesn’t pay £5 The National Mullet Club were having a fishing meeting around the area of Bucklers Hard, so I trogged the length of the estuary (river my botty) to find them and say hello. Some good conversations and their best fish of the day was a nice 6Lb fish that is the biggest they have known from the estuary. I had spent too long nattering and virtually no time fishing during the trip…so before setting off home I snaffled a quick fish… just to keep my reputation ![]() |
