Unhappy Weymouth Harbour... How to catch those ghost like mulllet

Ive just sat for three hours from 7am till 10am next to the marine HQ near wilkinson, the sun was perfect the tide was just coming in (High tide was at 9:28) and i must of counted over 100 good size mullet swimming past.

I was float fishing a small size 10 hook at a depth of around 10inches using light course fishing gear.

Bait = white Bread rolled into a ball around hook no bigger than 7mm diameter, i also tried fishing it pinched on the eye of the hook so the bait was bouyant on the surface.

I also had bait floating on the surface as i would do if i was carp fishing.

But still no Bite, the fish just swam past not even looking at the free bread on the surface.

please help?

Thank you

Re: Weymouth Harbour... How to catch those ghost like mulllet

lol welcome to the world of mullet fishing!

in my opinion a carp is much easier to catch

by the sounds of things the fish were in shoals of 50 or more and swimming past you ?

sounds to me like they have recently arrived for the spring (this is early and a good sign! considering how cold its been)

however they wont be feeding for a while yet.....you can mash up some bread and let small amounts sink through the shoal.. and occasionally one will pick it off but its more luck than judgement this early in the season...

also up your way you get alot of thin lip mullet... a mephs spinner with a small rag worm seems to work for these

carry on carp fishing for another 6 weeks or so before you target the mullet!

cheers

dave

Re: Weymouth Harbour... How to catch those ghost like mulllet

Will, from what ive heard from Richard and the boys at the angling centre ,small 1/2 long pieces of rag on a tiny mepps spinner works really well for the hoards of mahoosive Mullet in the harbour.( as suggested by Dave, now that ive read his full post lol )
Never tried for them personally cos i only fish for what i can eat ! ( the week of trying to catch some specimen sirloin steaks still haunts me ) !

Re: Weymouth Harbour... How to catch those ghost like mulllet

Now I’ve brought a house in Weymouth I’m going to start targeting the shore fish instead of carp, time for a change for the summer. I’m going to have another crack this afternoon for the mullet, see if I can end the weekend on a high note. Was thinking of taking a trip over chesil, but from what I’ve heard, there’s not a lot to catch out there at the moment.
Loads of thanks for the advice guys!!!

Perseverance is the only answer to those annoying mullet ,should you run out of patience or the will to live while waiting for an elusive take ,there is another tried and tested method to baggin a few .... A HAND GRENADE !!

Mullet shoal up at this time of the year, but very very rarely take a bait of any kind.
In my neck of the woods (Devon ) it's hardly worth trying for these fickle fish until the sea tempratures have been reached and this occurs around about mid June.

Good Luck.
