Shore newbie mullet help in Torbay.

Hi.

I used to have a small dinghy in Brixham Breakwater and a couple of times hit a couple of mullet under the assistance of a guru from Brixham initials AT from Brixham if you know him.

Anyhoo, thinking of having a go from shore for them in earnest but not entirly sure I have my facts straight, please feel free to comment on the below.

1. 10 line straight through waggle float with split shot, small hook. Using Shimano exage rod and reel, gotta landing net.
2. ground bait non stop with bread/mackerel mushed up.
3. fish a couple of inches off the bottom with mackerel flesh or sprat.
4. low water better than high.
5 Venues Brixham breakwater by paint rafts or the Dart - I realise I am not going to get a mark, and would not dare ask, a yes or no will suffice I'll try and work it out from there.
6. be very patient!!

That's what I think I require/need to do.

Questions.

1. is there a better time to fish? daylight, early, late, sunny, cloudy?
2. Mullet spinning - no idea what or how to do this any clues.

Thanks in advance

BD

Re: Shore newbie mullet help in Torbay.

I have seen people catch mullet with bread baited hook after ground baiting with bread.

Brixham harbour is said to be good for mullet by people who have caught, but no personal experience.

Mullet come all the way up the Dart to Totnes weir in summer, but haven't seen any for a month.

Not much help, I'm afraid.

Re: Shore newbie mullet help in Torbay.

Brixham harbour is full of Mullet, and the best time of year is July up to Dec, the latest i have caught them here is 17th Dec on the fish quay, but i think fishing here has now been banned but not sure on this.

Best bait ,,,without doubt is any oily fish flesh ie mackerel, pilchard, herring, spratt,,,,,bread is my 2nd choice.

METHOD.......Mash up 20/30 Mackerel in a bucket add a couple of pounds of bran ( the stuff you get in health shops (dead cheap), if you can get it add a half pint of Pilchard oil, stir this all together then cover and leave in a sunny place in the garden for 24 hrs to mature LOL.

When you arrive at your mark and before tackling up ladle some of that rubby dubby in the water, this will save time.
It wont be long before the grey ghost's start wandering into your swim.

Tackle.......use a twelve foot match rod the type they use for Roach and perch, a good reel with a smooth clutch is very important i use a small Shimano.

Line ,,,,,, use 4/5 BS as any thing over this size and harbour mullet are reluctent to take a bait....IMO.

Where..... Brixham Breakwater all the way along inside,,,Fresh water quarries off rocks facing the breakwater
( be very carefull here as rocks are very slippery),,,the promenade close to marina entrance.

When.....very early morning (first light)

Tide,,,,,,,Brix Har... last 2 hours of ebb and the first 2 of the flow.

Conditions,,,, sunny with very light wind.

Tip,,,,,,,,wipe Muscillin on your line before fishing, this really helps with quick strikes for shy fish as it keeps your line floating.............

Good luck Mate.

Re: Shore newbie mullet help in Torbay.

Another method i have used with great success for mullet is floating crust at night in Torquay harbour and Brixham, this is a method that sought's out some big fish.

To fish this method use the above gear.

Method......slide a small bubble float ( about 1 inch Dia)half filled with water onto your main line, pinch in a small split shot about 4 feet up the line, allow Bfloat to sit on this shot and sqeeze another on the other side, so now your Bfloat is fixed, tie on your hook and there you have it.

BAIT,,,, for this method i use uncut crusty loaves, tear off a piece of crust about 10p size and thread the hook through a few times and cast out.

Groundbait ,,,,,throw half a dozen pieces of crust on to the surface of the water and cast amongst these,,,,,
when a fish takes watch out for some big runs.

PS use the Muscillin here as well.
