Re: a problem

a lot of people like to use a bag (usually an onion sack) full of mashed bread left out to waft lots of tasty morsels in the tide, then pop a bit of bread on your hook, roach tackle will suffice, and trot the bait down tide amongst the groundbait,i think a lot of people down in your part of the world like to leger, when i do that i simply use standard quiver tip tactics with a pinch of bread flake or a bunch of maddies on a size 14,
its always worked for me ,spinning a small perch spinner can be good apparently but i have never tried it.
best of luck mate.

Try the method feeder that the Carp boys use, medium to heavy tip feeder rod dependent on tide. Killer tactics that are used in Christchurch Mullet have been caught to 6lb on it.

Cheers

Re: a problem

thanks for the help guys, great help. the tackle im using at the moment is 5 pound tackle, a light freshwater rod, and a bubble float. i see most of the fish are around at low tide. why is this?

Re: a problem

Shaun,
Good idea with the method feeder...I've fished christchurch harbour a lot for roach but never tried for mullet...must give it a go next time i'm down that way.

Steve,
Just a suggestion, bin the bubble float and get a drennan crystal chubber instead. It will do everything a bubble float will but offers far less resistance for the fish so bites should be more positive

Dave

Cool Re: a problem

There was a good artical in one of the recent sea angling magazines i think it was Total Sea Fishing. With Mullet you have to feed them up with groundbait to get their confidence going. Ground bait could be minced fish or fishy type meal they use for Carp... essential ingredient is good mashed bread... don't liquidise it as the particles are too small. Then a whacking great bit of fluffy white bread on your hook.

To hook it.... rip a piece out of the centre of the loaf lightly press it in the middle, then nick your hook into it then fold the bread over the hook and finally pinch the bread aroud the hook shank.. but no hook should be showing. Use fluro carbon line its lightrefractive index is next to nothing, so it should not spook the fish. Its expensive but will help to fool them.

For float fishing listen to what Dave M said don,t use a bubble float as when it hits the water there is too much disturbance, better to use the Drennan chubbers or similar. Every now and again hold your float up in the flow and the bread should rise and fall enticingly. If you don't catch....go to the pub and drown you sorrows.

Hope its of help... and you get a big one

Cheers
Shaun
