Help starting mulleting

I live in mevagissey & would like to have a go at catching a mullet.Can anybody help me with the basics( Line,bait,rigs,venues around mevagissey harbour)Also is there a mullet season.All the best martin.

well, actually mullet fishing is a very like coarse fishing. first, you want a pair of tights and fill them with bread, you will see mullet coming and feeding off it,

Secondly you want at max 4 LB line, a very light rod, coarse fishing float, a landing net, and some skill at playing the fish, the best bait to use is either some bread, sweetcorn or luncheon meat.

The best rig, well i find it great is a hair rig, this allows for mushy baits that fall off hooks to stay on the loop.

you can tie your own rigs, and if you think they work, then try them, there is a new invention in fishing everyday, i heard VAN DEN EYNDE punch crumb groundbait attracts mullet.

So here i will make a list of things for you that you need

1. TIGHTS £1
2. ROD, REEL £20-£30
3. Sweetcorn, 30P
4.Luncheon Meat £1
5. Coarse Float £1
6. Landing net £10-£20
7.Line £2-£3
8.Punch Crumb, van den eynde £3-£4
9.Rigs £2-£3

i love mullet fishing. but the secret to it is ground bait, ground bait , ground bait , ground bait , ground bait and maybe a little more ground bait. do this in one spot for at least 2 weeks and you will soon have them takeing bread easyly.
another thing to do if bit impaciant is to try fishing early hours of the morning where you know tuorist feed swans and ducks. hear thay will allready be ground baited up ready for a hook. but the swan can be a real pain in the arse.
fluro line is a must i use 6-8 lb with size 12 - 4 hooks depending on size of fish, shy-ness and if the are bass around(bass will take bread,bacon,chickin and many more silly things), i some times use a bubble float, but normaly free line in my own funny way. by this i mean :- i put a fluffy sinking bait on the hook and then tie a piece of crust 6" - 12" above. this will act as a float and a bit of surface ground bait

Some great info there for you.....good luck for this years mulleting!

Should be starting to show up the rivers my way pretty soon so hope to get out myself in the near future as not been for mullet for a couple of years.

If there's anywhere near you that has a pier etc. that gets used regularly by tourists crabbing have a go there. No need to worry about groundbaiting then as all that bacon or whatever they are using does it for you. Also, don't feel you have to use bread. My biggest mullet came on a small section of ragworm fished on a size 10 hook with a fluro carbon hooklink and bubble float off the harbour wall at Dartmouth. Only fished there because I was getting some good bites on the crabline when crabbing with the kids. Used bread and had instant bites but they were just stripping it off the hook so switched to rag with instant results! A bit of bacon rind also works there as that is what the fish are seeing all the time.

I saw the biggest mullet I have ever seen it was all of 2ft 6ins long just below the surface in the river Torrage at Bideford yesterday afternoon, just below the quay wall, and there was a river festival going on at the time, speed boats, slippery pole walking-bodies falling in water, and the fish was just swimming around them.
