Re: first car

they all rip the arse out of young drivers, that sounds about right.

my first car was a banged up volvo 340 1.4, i was paying £1200 third party only.

the premiums will go down eventually ben, just get your no claims up and every year the price drops. and take it from me don't get done for speeding, the 5 years to get the bloody points off seems like a life time.

Talking Re: first car

First car was a Vauxhall Viva, HA I think E reg 1967. Mate had a garage with two of these in it so we made one good one out of them both. Hehe, because the filler cap was at the rear under the boot lid, petrol would pour out if you parked on a hill!!!

Have had ton’s of “sheds” ever since then, but after driving a Metro for the last few years I now have a Rover 600 which is awesome and although it has a boot, the rear seats still fold down, allowing the carriage of tons of fishing rods without them having to rest on the dashboard!! Which posses the question….How the hell Ben, are you going to manage with a roller-skate!!!???

Re: first car

Mine was/is a 1970 Plymouth, Fury III, convertable w/a 318ci. I still have it in the garage. Haven't started it since 87, maybe??
It is one huge car. I drive around the older parts of town and can't imagine trying to pilot that thing on those narrow streets. With the top down, it looks ike an aircraft-carrier. In highschool, I called/named the USS Nimitz.

Re: first car

Hi Ben,

Good luck with your Mini, great little run arounds.

One of the problems with the earlier Minis was the position of the fuel pipe. This was electrical and situated above the nearside rear wheel, if you drove through deep puddles they used to cut out at times. You can tell if the pump is in the same place by switching the ignition on without starting the engine, listen for a tick tick ticking noise from the rear of the car. Likewise in heavy rain, water used to enter the bonnet from the grill and cause the car to cut out. Modifications were done but I can't remember when. Perhaps some of the more knowledgeable members can enlighten me on this.

Cheers

Drew

What goes around, comes around. The electric fuel pump was replaced by a mechanical one behind the block, then reappeared on the back subframe on the later fuel injected cars. Ben, I hope you are handy with a toolkit and a welder cos you're gonna need both. Minis need constant TLC. Google Minispares in Potters Bar, excellent mail order service, way cheaper than most. I've been in, around and under Minis for years so PM if you run into problems. Currently looking after an E reg Mayfair, an L reg Cooper and a Pimlico and NONE of the swine are roadworthy. I HATE fixing cars in winter

First car for me, a knackered Austin 1300GT from the auctions. It died when I took a humpback bridge too fast and the rear subframe came up high enough to cut the hydrolastic pipe

Steve
