Re: first car

ben, DO NOT go with one mechanics oppinion. Take it some place else for another apraisal.

One grease monkey will tell you he'll need $2000 to overhaul the widget, where a mechanic might tweek 2 screws, shake your hand and send you happily on your way.

Re: first car

Don't want to sound negative, but 'whole of the braking system' probably means a few lines and hoses to renew as well as the pads and shoes, maybe 60 quid DIY but through a garage??? Gearbox is likely to be either jumping out of second (live with it!) or noisy idler gear. Under twenty quid in parts but engine out to do it. Floor going - could mean anything from a patch to a new floorpan. Again, if you can weld, parts will be a snip. If you get it done, ten hours plus labour.
I think Ben's right to let it go (unless he fancies taking up car maintenance instead of fishing ).

Steve

NNNiiiiiice motor...

However, what's the point of this? How many cars are going to out run a tuned v70 T5? not many. Even then, that's what the radio's for isn't it?

Surely this is a bit of a toy for the force that paid for it.....

Edit: I'm presuming that this is a full time/365 days a year police resource, and not a short term loan used as a PR exercise?

Re: first car

Tempted to say my first car was a motorbike. But it couldn't be described as a bike.

My first car was a nissan micra. An absolutely appalling little thing but I was totally over the moon. No more cycling bl@@dy miles to Warren Mill or StyNyll ponds . Drove it all over the place before replacing it with a far more practical Cavalier. Went very Japanese again after that .....

It's always great when you get your own transport, but I still ca't help feeling that some of the magic came from the effort of getting there. Too many anglers now just pull up behind their peg and fish. Though I'm not for a minute saying that appies to most of those on these forums. dig dig dig and stop. (but not before driving).
