Tackle shops *sigh*

Got off work early today after looking online at a local tackle shop apparently had the 3 reels I wanted at a decent price.

I wanted a play with them first as my last purchase I bought online and I think with something like a reel with hindsight its best to have them in hand before settling on them.

Went into the shop and the reel wasnt in on display, asked the bloke (who tbh couldnt care less) if they had any other reels in stock and he said "only whats on display" and continued talking about poles with his friend.

Now I am sorry but it was a pretty poor show, saldy he didnt know I was willing to part with 150-200 quid so I was kind of taken back by his flippent answer and walked out.

No wonder takle shops are dead in the water compared to the online shops if thats how they react to new faces

Re: Tackle shops *sigh*

unfortunately i know what you mean.. One of the two tackle shops that is in my area closed down and now the last shop has an attitude of "oh well every one has to come to us now". The last time i was in there i wanted 3 things, When asked what i wanted the reply was the same "if its not there we haven't got any" and don't know when they will be in, Why aren't tackle shops doing more to keep customers instead of driving them to the internet.?

Its a shame.

I remember as a lad my local shop coldnt do enough to help you, if he didnt know what I was on about he would whip 2 or 3 catalouges out and find what I wanted and order it for the next time I dropped by.

He went bust eventually sadly.

The thing that got me was this shop had reams of "stock" on his site and his ebay shop but apparently not his trading unit.

Virtual stock! fantastic!

Re: Tackle shops *sigh*

I'm fortunate in that I live within walking distance of a great local shop, Colgard Outdoors, run by Bobby and Rod Colyer. I have been shopping there for about 15 years now, and I keep going back because Bobby and Rod are always attentive to their customers' needs. A couple of years ago I was looking for a very hard-to-find lure from Japan that nobody else around here can get for me. Bobby was stumped, so he asked Rod. Next thing I know, Rod has 4 catalogs out on the glass case where handguns are displayed. The smallest of the catalogs was nearly an inch thick, and he flipped through every one of them until he found my lure about 10 pages from the back of the last catalog! I couldn't tell him not to order it for me after that!

My late father had a saying :- you don't get much service for your money these days, & once you've parted with it , you get even LESS !!

I can remember as a kid a bloke called 'Derick' He worked in a sports shop with a fishing department. Me and my old man would go and get all our tackle off of him and what he did not have he could get you within 2 days,He Was also a hive of infomation..But most of all he always had time for any fisherman who wanted to chat.

Yes - a bit of banter & service goes a long way in the retail trade, there's still good shops out there, but seem to be getting fewer & far between.
Some seem to have lost sight of the fact though that this has can lead to an an unlocking effect on the wallet.
