Ghosts? :) Clouds scudded across endless blue skies, the sun shinning brightly as we rambled through rolling green hills opening to endless meadows offering wide panoramic views of the countryside beyond. We were close to the Lithuanian border with the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad and the countryside while not breathtaking was certainly beautiful. Our plan was to tour old manor houses and castles along the banks of Lithuania’s largest river (the Nemunas) and given the old, historic and rather decrepit nature of such buildings the conversation soon wandered onto the subject of ghosts. For me the paranormal is a subject of some fascination and I wanted an insight as to the feelings of my traveling companions before our arrival at the first dark and chilling halls of the ruins that would be a manor house in the town of Silute. Knowing the views of many and the fact that such beliefs can often attract ridicule it was with some apprehension that I asked... “So do you believe in ghosts”? My question ignored by the girls in the back of the car was greeted by a laugh from Marius so no words were needed to convey his skeptism. We did however manage to agree that in all reality something almost certainly exists beyond our current understanding and that some time in the future it would be discovered, investigated, labeled and explained. Until then we will continue, for arguments sake, to refer to them as ghosts. As it turned out the first manor house on our planned rout and several there after, were neither particularly dark nor chilling! In fact, apart from a sad state of disrepair they still shone with grandeur from a different and nobler era from the countries past. It is sad to me that such buildings are allowed to fall into such a state, especially as protected buildings but much of the blame must fall on the Russians as during the Soviet occupation such constructions were either turned to some manual usage such as the storage of grain or demolished altogether. Our arrival at Penemune Castle in the early afternoon however, was to realize a childhood dream. When visiting castles as a boy I always wanted darkened corridors and even darker rooms, strange and creepy noises and that wonderful mixture of fear and excitement that greets the unknown. What I in fact always got was ruins, usually laid open to the elements, filled with tourists and about as frightening as a trip to Disney World. ![]() The Castle itself, which nestles near the banks of the River Nemunas and is surrounded on all sides by 5 lakes is only 400 years old. That said, the history of the site goes far back beyond the Castle as previously here could be found a Manor house belonging to the under Chamberlain of the Lowlands. In 1597 the land was bought by Janos Eperes, a rather ambitious chap who wanted to build a palatial home and estate for himself and his family to live in. ![]() Entry to the Castle was just a couple of Litas each (less than a pound) and within a few moments of our arrival we were exploring the darkened corridors and pitch black rooms I had yearned to find in a castle since boyhood. It was superb, uneven floors, holes, things to trip over and best of all, hardly any light… it was a Health and Safety Examiners dream come true, but I didn’t care, I was having fun, a little bit of danger made it all the more exciting! We climbed both towers, photographing the river as a massive storm slowly closed in and the weather took a slow turn for the worse. When leaving the second tower I wandered into yet another blackened room and immediately felt very uncomfortable. I called Badget who joined me but she couldn’t feel anything and we left to find the others. As we wandered down the corridor from that room Marius took two pictures of our approach, the first we can’t be seen as the hall was too dark but in the second we are clearly visible but totally oblivious to anything else that may be present. Now I will let you decide. I have watched a heap of paranormal TV programs and DVD,s, read a heap of books and know these strange objects appearing on the following two pictures to often be referred to as ‘orb’s’. I should mention that no other photograph taken that day (you will see many more as Badget plans to write a report of the entire journey) show these objects so it couldn’t be a malfunction of the camera. I have considered things such as dirt on the lens but if you look carefully you can see that each ‘orb’ is different enough to be clearly identifiable as to be individual and the position of each ‘orb’ changes from one photo to the next. The position changes cannot be put down to the change of camera angle as some ‘orb’s’ have moved left while others seem to have gone right, up or down. As with all such images it is, when the need exists, possible to come up with enough of a rational explanation as to cast some doubt. In this instance I can only offer dust reflecting light but if this is the case why was it not present in any other photograph and why would the particles move in different directions. ![]() ![]() I am not saying this is two photos of ghostly apparitions but will say it is at the very least extremely ODD! :) I should add that the resizing of the images have taken away a large amount from the detail. In the original, each object has a slightly different shape and in many cases also seem to have layers or simple structures. For anybody with a genuine interest I am happy to upload the actual images for download :) __________________ http://wandering-angler.com

Re: Ghosts? :) Very interesting, It seems more real as you try and make it out as a reasonable explanation yourself whereas many other people would jump straight to the conclusion that it is an orb! I would like to visit a place like that, And did you possibly see the white dots (orbs) when you was walking around with the group?, Maybe you did but put it to the back of your mind with the first explanation that came in your head! Still Very interesting. Michael!

Re: Ghosts? :) Hi Michael, I can say with all honesty we really didn't see a thing. As I have said in the post, I am not saying these are ghosts and I only use the word 'orb' because these days it has become the correct term for such an object. But so far the only explanations offered by skeptics are rain drops (impossible as we were 2 floors up and in an enclosed corridor) and dirt, again impossible as dirt cannot move around the lens and as you can see in the pictures the objects are in different places on the two photos. In the original images the objects are much brighter and there are more of them. There is bound to be an explanation... who knows though what it is __________________ http://wandering-angler.com
