Cool Re: The Old Wellies Dangle in Dinlge!!

Hi Fellas,

Sorry it’s late but so much catching up to do both at work and home. I think its called Penance!

After a 10 hour overnight ferry trip from Swansea to Cork a our own cabin for a kip, the day dawned bright and early. We had left Swansea 2 hours late so we arrived in Cork at 9.15am. After a 2-hour drive we arrived in Camp near Tralee. A friend of one of my club members met us. Sadly Jim, who had arranged the trip, could not travel along with his pal Chris, so we were down to 2 people only. This had a marked effect on our Boat booking, which meant we did not go out. But hey we were in Ireland on the Dingle, so we had to shore fish! Tough isn’t it? But someone had to do it!

Saturday night saw us fishing a mark called the “Trench” a noted Ray mark. It didn’t disappoint, we caught 12 Thorn back rays 6 each Welly got the largest at circa 8lbs, topped up with about 8 or 9 doggies between us. Doggies they get everywhere! We tumbled into the cottage at about 2.30am after some grub and a drink we hit the hay.
No pictures from our best nights fishing I’m afraid, we had no working camera with us…which Welly may explain…or on the other hand he may not.

After digging some worm on a “secret” lugworm bed (phew that’s hard work) we were set to fishing Ballyquin beach
The second day saw us fishing a steep shelving beach. One thing we found out about Irish beach fishing on the Dingle is………..you need a good high surf running to stir the fish up into feeding. Ballyquin saw us catching mackerel on Tobies and Dexters. Plenty of Sea Trout jumping but none taking a lure.

Our pal Roddy was on hand by mobile phone to give us encouragement and an idea of where to fish and get bait. What a mate!

We fished several locations during the day and night…including Fenit Pier… again mackerel but not our target species of Sting Rays or Monkfish showed. We fished Spa for Sting Ray, Clogher Head for Wrasse and Pollock What a view we had from the rocks and road. Cappa Channel for Bass and Sea Trout, and finally Inch and Trabeg for Flounder and Bass again at night until 3.30 in the morning.

We had a lovely drive around to Dingle and the harbour then off to Slea Head what magnificent scenery.

Our last day saw us fishing the Cappa Channel again for Bass and Sea Trout, I was surrounded at one stage by specimen sized Thick Lip Mullet but all I had to fish with was a spinning rod and some lures!!! Next year it’s a float rod and bread!
To cut a long story short we fished hard for Sea Trout, but to no avail, our species count was halved due to not boat fishing. But we ended up with 11 species some of which we had not caught in the Forum species hunt. MMMmmmm points! These included Bass, Flounder, Conger, 4 bearded Rockling, Rock Goby, Blenny, Dogfish, Thornback Rays, Mackerel Pollock and Wrasse.

I have to say we had a brilliant time even though the daytime fishing was tough, but with 2 Chefs cooking we ate like mad oh and we had a few drinks as well. The Irish people are great and My pal Roddy was a diamond geezer, taking us around on Saturday when we arrived showing us marks to fish and even digging our bait for us!! He fished a couple of nights with us as well. What a star. We will be going back next year but probably in September as we have the “knowledge” now and how to go about it.

I can highly recommend the Dingle area.
