| Re: "Giant Blue Fin Tuna - Part Deux "Horse Mackerel, that's what we calls 'em" said the skipper "about 12 mile nor east by east, just look for the herring boats and that's where the tuna are, and quite a good size this season too". We were on board by 2.30am and underway by 3.00am on a steam which seemed like never ending. As the first light of day came so did the lights of the herring boats and tuna fishermen, my first thought was it looked like a town in the distance. We picked up fresh bait from another boat (herring) and I was given the wheel and told to hold off while the skipper prepeared the rig."Now drop the fish over the stern, when I gives ya the nod" was my instructions. The skipper then backed the boat to about 20 feet of the loaded herring net being hawled aboard the drifter, and I was given the word to let go. The bait had not gone down anymore than about 10feet when this great big blue-grey thing came from under the boat and hooked up on our rig. The chair swung round, and ratchet on the real screamed out, and on top of all that the skipper went full throttle ahead, and I ended up on by back tight to the stern board. We were soon clear of the other boats when I was told to get in the chair, after 30 minutes I was out of wind, so the other helper took over, this went on for two and a half hours until finally our fish was along side with three gaffs set and tyed. This was the first time I have ever seen a fish this big, as it laid on the deck it was 24" deep, I never thought to measure the lenght as we now had to gut the thing and cover to keep the sun off. I later found out its weight was 825pounds, and the skipper made $1700.00 from the dealer for that one fish, which by the way went to Japan. Best regards, Deepsix. |
