Re: The studs salmon !

This is a photo of a nice salmon/grilse @ 5lb 2oz caught by me last year/my 1st year in club river The big agivey. I caught my 1st salmon 2 days before this one on the fly and ill never forget as i saw the fish take the fly. I take the fly rod and the spinning rod, i take 3 casts on spinner 1st then 3 casts on fly and then move. I left my house at 3.55pm and i was home at 4.30pm. I caught it on my 3rd cast with the spinner. Two other guys were fishing same pool since 10am and when i caught it there eyes nearly dropped. I read the water and that was my prize. Had 2 salmon this year on the fly and many brown trout. Many thanks again lee, you are a true gent thank you. Tight lines.

Re: The studs salmon !

Perfect hook up nick, right in the scissors. Wheather useing the fly, spinner or the worm they all take doing it the right way and to be successful all 3 methods take great skill. Worming to me is not as easy as people think, and that goes for spinning. I remember it well nick i cast 3 foot above the lie, let very small spinner sink count to 3sec retrieve very slowly, pause for 5sec let it sink deep suddenly FISH ON. Pure skill and presentation.

Re: The studs salmon !

Thanks drew, i use braid as mainline on fixspool for spinning and worming with tiny but strong swivel and 3 feet of 10lb leader. Rod is a lovely soft daiwa kevelar 9foot 9 inch spinning rod and because of the braid the battle is heart stopping. My fly rod for salmon is a 11foot 3inch daiwa whisker soft action. In the agivey you have to work hard to catch them as they are not in great numbers, knowing the lies, temp, rain etc etc is the key and how you fish your fly, spinner and worm has a lot to do with it. And most of all have they come out of the sea from eating etc and up the river on there long and hard journey to spawn. They show around end july, august been the dure month and sept oct been the prime months. They spawn end dec/jan time, end off season for us is 20th oct Our club river is 12 miles long so being in the right place at the right time helps. I have a rod on another river for 1st may for springers/salmon aroung 12lb and upwards, im looking 4ward to that. 1st march start of season, brown trout time and club record drew is 7lb 10oz. Them bass you caught mate is some fishing let me tell you, i mean that. Tight lines drew.
