Re: " Giant " Blue Fin Tuna .... a story

Great read, Matey - are there any pics to come?

What's the deal with setting one of these trips up? It's something I'd like to try and work in, sometime in the future ...

Fish biting through 400lb mono, eh? Blimey, that's scary - makes one almost wonder how you'd ever get one in!!

Cool Re: " Giant " Blue Fin Tuna .... a story

Hi guys,

Yup I have some pics to come...... but I have to explain that there were only 3 of us on the Boat, inlcuding the skipper, so when the fish strikes you have a job to do, which is reel the other 3 rods and squid bars in put the rods into the cabin out of the way cos they are real big mothers and cost dirca 2 grand each and you don't want to step on one! Plus when you are rolling about in the Atlantic 10 miles out, big swells etc and the fish are 7 -900 yards away and with digi tele lens its cr--p. But i will post what i have and you can judge for yourselves.

Johnboy i am putting some details on my website, as soon as my webmaster has time and I have all the details worked out.

Will post pics soon.

Cheers
Shaun

Cool Re: " Giant " Blue Fin Tuna .... a story

Just another bit of info, there were 3 other boats trolling and they did not have ome strike, so we did pretty well considering. Also there was a film crew from "The Blue Planet" filming, they were diving to film the Tuna feeding. Its for the next series.

Largest Tuna ever caught in the area...... 968lbs!!!

Cheers
Shaun

welll all i can say is wow.
i have seen thresher sharks ball up and hit mackeral and that was an amazing site but i bet the tuna rounding up baitfish was amazing.
your making me want to goto ireland now!

is there only a short season?

and when you say bait fish what are these bait fish? cos to a mackeral bait fish are whitebait sandeel and sprats.

to a 900lb tuna they wouldnt even make a snack!

Hi Dave,

The season is from September through to 1st week November and then they are gone, sometimes early sometimes later.
The bait fish are: Saries pike or Ballyhoo which are a silver kind of Garfish, shorter and stockier, usual Mackerel plus Horse Mackerel or Scad, Sand Eels and sometimes herring. Most of the time it's Saries and Mackerel.

As per "Blue Planet" they ball them up and feed.

I am going back next year so if anyone wants to come let me know.

Cheers
Shaun

Try Ballyhoo common name for them.

Cheers

Re: " Giant " Blue Fin Tuna .... a story

Shaun,

great post..what a super trip...

I mentioned this thread in the pub tonight...what a bl**dy arguement it started!

The arguement was...you only get tuna in the tropics......

Now in 40 years as a keen angler i have never heard of irish tuna fishing charters......but I was fighting the case that your post was fact cos I have no reason whatsoever to doubt you ..

Basically everyone saying you must have been in florida/india etc etc..."tuna dont come to uk waters" etc....

All I can say is i hope you get that business website sorted and lets have more details mate.....all my life i've dreamed of "big game fishing".....and ireland is well within reach for a weekend trip...

Is it just me who has never heard about this fishing? are others on the forum as suprised as me that it exists?

Cant wait for more details

Dave

Re: " Giant " Blue Fin Tuna .... a story

Tuna used to be caught in the North Sea, they followed herring schoals,
anglers got into drifters ( comercial fishing) boat and fish from there, fancy a 12 foot dinghy in the sea at night? Think the last one was boated in mid 50's.

Shaun thanks for the write up, pm with details when you have them
