Re: Juvenile Plaice or Flounder ?????

Thought the red spots gave it away as a plaice (imho as a freshwater man)
Do the spots get redder with age ??

You get a lot of flounders with red spots ,in this part of the world Martin... So makes id hard ,and i didnt look at the belly ,which gives it away ,as the plaice has a herring bone pattern and the flounder doesn`t

Re: Juvenile Plaice or Flounder ?????

That's what i like about the forum - learn something new all the time, always someone has a difinitve answer.
However can plaice & flounders interbreed ?? (ie can generations of flounders inherit the plaice gene ?? - hence the spots ?? )

Sounds quite possible ...... the intensity of the spots depends on the bottom too , on mud the fish tend to be darker with no spots , shaley /gritty ground and they tend to be lighter and spottier ...

Re: Juvenile Plaice or Flounder ?????

Just googled "can plaice and flounders interbreed" & it seems possible & a point for debate.
If these were freshwater fish, im sure by now it would be proven 1 way or other as i reckon it would be easier to experiment under closer scientific conditions than in sea. (we know e.g. roach bream rudd do this)
