What on earth is this fish???

I was fishing in the River Severn and a friend caught this fish. It had around 5 or 6 large holes down each side near the head where it blew water from, and one on top of its head. It had a very wierd mouth underneath the body with pads, as seen in the photo. As we put it back in it actually come back up the bank a little before going back in! As you can see it also has a hole on its head! Help rquired!!!

A Brook Lamprey.... King Henry I 'Beauclerc', was supposed to have died from food poisoning after eating a 'surfeit of Lampreys' a fish that was a delicacy in 12th Century England and something that he was said to enjoy very much.... I reckon that they must've been very well prepared because most people, on seeing them, would probably be well turned off!

Very intresting fish
these hitch a ride on salmon all the way from the sea
to the upper reaches of a river
where they spend a good deal of their lives
the poor salmon does all the hard work
