Plaice and Lemon Sole pics The brother in law has just given me a couple of fish so I thought I would stick them on here for I.D purposes. Another interesting point though is the size of the fishes row for the size of the actual fish. Also look at the difference in size of the Plaice row before and after spawning. Just for the record these fish were caught by trawlers and not on rod and line. Both fish were packed full of eggs as you can see and were just about to spawn,if these fish had been successful in their spawning how many more fish would be around in the next couple of years??? Makes you wonder sometimes why they're allowed to catch these or any other fish in their spawning season. Last edited by Fishing Forum Admin; 02-17-2005 at 04:14 PM.

Re: Plaice and Dab pics That first roe has got hairs on it! The first fish is a lemon sole, you can tell by the colour and the shape but the biggest i d feature is the yellow/orange under the gill cover.

Re: Plaice and Dab pics On the plus side though the sole will be a lot better eating than a dab. ![]()

Re: Plaice and Dab pics I've never seen a lemon sole in the flesh. They're rarely caught on rod and line. I did hear of one caught at Worbarrow Bay when I was fishing there once. Nice fish of around 2.5 lb. Incidentally, I saw a witch (rare variety of flatfish not the type with a broomstick) dead on the same beach, alongside an "angler" who caught it earlier - it was about 10 cm long. He thought it was a dab. We then discussed how this fish was very rare and that it was a shame to kill such a fish. Then we discussed (well I did anyway) that even if it was a dab it was well short of the local southern sea fisheries size limit of 23cms. People like this let the rest of us down! Anyway, before I go off on one, a good site for fish identification is Ahttp://web.ukonline.co.uk/aquarium/A (remove the A's).
