Does indeed look like a weaver to me. Did it have a black spiney dorsal? I've never seen one myself, but I'm told the sting from a weaver can be VERY painful, maybe even hospital inducing in some cases......

Deffo a Weever fish mate - poisonous little fookers too ! they have hollow barbs in the dorsal fin which inject venom ( usually into some poor sods foot who manages to stand on one as the fish bury just under the sand ) and as Rich says this can lead to a trip to sit in casualty all night !
They do grow bigger than that - perhaps twice the size but thankfully not much bigger )
