crucian/goldfish ?

Can anybody confirm there is such a thing as a crucian goldfish hybrid ?
Goldfish have definately been put in the lake and this behaved as crucians do, bending itself to one side and then being still and quite stiff. The shape and scale pattern are also very similar.

Or can it only be a goldfish ?

I was in a bit of a hurry and forgot to weigh it. Approx 1lb (or a bit more)
Caught Sunday 13th July

Re: crucian/goldfish ?

What a pretty fish. Personally i would say a hybrid as its very dinner plate shaped. I could be wrong though.

Re: crucian/goldfish ?

Most definately a "Heinz 57 variety". Probably a large percentage is Brown Goldfish (despite the colouring) but looks to have a mix of Koi/Carp and countless ornamentals in its parentage!

Generally there are many possibilities for hybrids amongst the carp family, some of them very difficult to spot and can cause much confusion. But can produce some stunning looking fish.

Re: crucian/goldfish ?

May be a giant fantail goldfish Perhaps. i have seen fish similar to this in ponds before but that be my best guess and if not that i would say it was a hybrid of some sort

Re: crucian/goldfish ?

It is well known that goldfish and carp regularly inter-breed. The species are so closely matched that many experts believe Goldfish should actually be included within the Carp family. To use the word hybrid when talking about goldfish and Carp is probably wrong. Hybrid normally refers to the combination of two separate species such as Roach and Bream.
As you have stated there are Goldfish and Crucian in the lake. Yes it is highly likely that it is a goldfish Crucian cross.

Re: crucian/goldfish ?

I would have to go for the crucian/goldfish because of it's behavior when handled. Anyone like to have a stab at this one - it's not a very good picture but this was caught from the same lake last year. It was about 20" long and orange along its back, it's flanks were white. The mouth is an odd shape but it wasn't disfigured from being caught like some fish are.

Re: crucian/goldfish ?

A grass carp maybe or some sort of carp hybrid. Carp/Chub Maybe not sure if that can happen but that is what it looks like
