Re: Fish identification needed

That is a very popular fish here in the Canaries, I live just across the water from Lanzarote in Fuerteventura.

The local name for the fish is Sargo its a striped bream and it is very tasty
Heres a larger one i caught last month

They can put up quite a fight as they get bigger!

The fish you show is a Zebra Seabream Diplodus cervinus

If you compare it with Twiddler's White Seabream Diplodus sargus you will see the White has alternate strong and weak narrow bands, whereas your Zebra (nice fish BTW) has six broad bands (including one above and almost through the eye) all of the same intensity.

There are at least four common multibanded seabreams, each having several vertical bands, in the Canary region. In addition to the two mentioned above are the Sharpsnouted Seabream Diplodus puntazzo and the Striped Seabream Lithognathus mormyrus

Thats only a start - there are lots more seabreams with one or two bands, or without any bands at all.

Most locals refer to any banded bream as "sargo"
