a black crucian????

I was fishing at Todber Manor again today and one of the fish I caught was one of the black crucians, I have been told they are a cross breed but was surprised at how crucian it really is

30 lateral line scales
elongated dorsal fin
no barbules
shape and scale pattern

really just the colour is non crucian

what is your opinion?????

Indeed it is - the lateral scale count of 30 is consistent with goldfish. Crucians have at least 31, and usually more. There are a lot of mongrel goldfish hybrids out there, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find true Simon Pure crucians.

Re: a black crucian????

Sorry if this thread is really old, but we get a lot of those were i fish (Royal Militery Canal in Kent) and they are usually called Skimmer Bream, usually in large shoals. Biggest we've seen (i wont say caught) is a 5lb one, which, sadly, i foul hooked whilst spinning.

?????????
The fish illustrated by Mithrandir is a BROWN GOLDFISH

They are nothing whatsoever like skimmer bream - have a look on the species hunt and record fish threads for photos of bream.

Re: a black crucian????

Roughly the same coloured fins and ones a tad darker than the other. Okay i was wrong, but easy mistake for a novice to make right?

Re: a black crucian????

iam by no means an expert but i believe ime right in saying that crucians often will cross bread with a couple of other species,on this account several british record claims have been thwarted. i think counting the lateral line scales and a dna test is the only positive 100% positive method.
