| May sound a silly question, but I love fishing and I love the great out doors. I would love to start Icefishing but how the heck do you do it? How do you pull a fish out of a frozen lake? Thanks, Mackerel. |

| Re: How do you do it From what I have seen on the tele, Ray mears etc, they cut a hole, usinga huge auger, the hole looks as if its about8-10 inches in diameter. Rods are very short, but in the US they do it in a little hut, so a short rod is needed. I think they either lower a pirk or small spinner which is fished like a pirk, or bait fish. |

| Re: How do you do it Here in the state of Nebraska, USA for Northern Pike we use what they call a tip-up, baited with a dead Smelt, then placed in the water anywhere in the water column, depending on water depth of course, or we jig fish for panfish (Bluegill, Crappie, Perch) with jigs tipped with maggots, waxworms, or actual fish pieces. __________________ DR PEPPER POWERED PIKE HUNTER |

| Re: How do you do it First & most important is finding safe ice. 4" of solid clear ice if you walking and are not real close to other people. Thicker ice if you are in a group closer together. If using some form of transportation (ATV, snowmobile, or 4wd truck) much more ice is needed. Watch for current area's where ice can vary in thickness quite quickly. Next cut your holes. Augers are the most popular method with 6"-8" most common but match to the size of fish your expecting. We usually use 8"-10".Axes, spud bars & chainsaws have also been used to open holes in the ice. Fishing is a vertical presentation. Fishing depending on ice conditions, time of day & type of fish can be anywhere from a couple feet of water depth to well over 100 feet of water. Jigging spoons & jigs is a popular method. Sometimes bait is added to the jig. Also bottom fishing or suspending live or dead bait is quite common. I have a thread on some common jigging spoons & jigs used in Canada on this site. Short rods or some form of tip-up are used to fish with. When a fish is hooked reel in or hand line in until the fish is close to the hole than guide it's head up into the hole. Depending on the fish either lift out of the hole with the line (small fish), reach in and lift out by hand or use a gaff to lift the fish out. Remember to dress warm & a good pair of warm dry boots are essential. On windy days some form of wind break or shelter is nice. | Re: How do you do it Quote:
Warm spell passing though for the last 5 days. Yesterday hit 18C or 64F. Average temperature forecast for the next week is 12C or 54F. Water temps have to cool at least 11C or 20F before ice will form. The ice fishing itch has really got me scratching. I can't wait as it's the best fishing of the year. | Re: How do you do it I saw a programme on TV not long ago where this chap in Alaska opens his garage doors, takes out his STOL plane, flies it 200 miles to a frozen lake then spends the day angling through the ice for northern Pike. Now THAT'S my idea of good a good fishing day! |
