Re: Ice fishing in Norway

Oh boy; you guys have more cans of worms than Bob Nudd! Okay there are very few beaches as such although there are many estuaries and there you could dig bait and "beach fish".
But; fishing off the rocks is a lot more popular. I like going to a little island where I'm alone and doing my own thing with a spinning rod. Make an open fire, cook a pot of coffee, catch a few fish and forget about the world! If you beach fish you'll be catching some beautiful plaice and flounders along with the odd codling, pollack, coaly etc.
But you only need a small boat to do that anywhere, bait fishing is almost unknown.
Many fjords in Norway have very straight sides and you can fish directly into water that is sometimes hundreds of meters deap so lures are a good option. Just about every jetty has its stock of fish. In summer there are always a few eels around and pollack, coaly’ and cod.
If you want to go to Hitra in spring then see www.fishingsport.com.
I'll be guiding but I can't promise big cod, I've caught masses of big cod there at that time of year but sometimes the coalfish, big coalfish, don’t seem to give the cod a look in. But they also weigh up to 18 kg. It’s the best fishing I know in Europe, but it's still called fishing!

Cool Re: Ice fishing in Norway

MMMmmmmm John Boy, I wonder if I can go next year.... will have to look at the finances a bit closer and cut down her housekeeping money a bit.

But am already commmitted to Irish Tuna fishing and a trip to Alderney and a possible trip back to Ireland in the Autumn so we will see.

Still a bank loan won't hurt will it?

Re: Ice fishing in Norway

Robert, thanks very much - more excellent info. Like the idea of the "escape" to a remote place with camping gear, sounds like a real stress buster!

Shaun - {bad voice in head} - "Go on, you *know* it makes sense" .. hehehe.

Let's hope we can get something sorted next year - I've only got a few bits on too (like getting married ) ... perhaps, Norway would make a good stag do?

Cheers,
JB.

A stag do? That's a new one.
Actually you don't camp out, but if one wants a break there are a few islands that are closer to the marks where one can have a brew up. The lodge has everything, luxury fitted kitchen, wirl pool, sauna, digital telly, it's own jetty the works. And some of the biggest coalfish in the world, just a boat ride away.

Rob, you're idea for setting up one-stop-shop type trips sounds like a real winner; Who in their right mind will be able to resist the chance for quality Cod fishing like that? Assuming it doesn't cost the absolute earth!

Wow, a journalist - sounds exciting, I'm hoping to be doing some writing on fishing in the not-too-distant, perhaps an article on Norwegian Cod Fishing would be a good place to start!!

Excellent information btw ... I noticed you gave another guy a lot of advice recently - sorry, can't remember his name Do you know if he went/is going? I'd love to know how that went.

Cheers,
JB.
hi jb,the information from rob was excellent,we caught plenty of cod and pollock,we have been back 3 times now,and am going again next april with 6 other guys,we fished from the boat in the day and from the shore at night,so we made the most of our time in norway, fantastic country, the people are great hosts, and it does`nt cost a fortune,if you need any advice, rob is the man,all the best to you jb,lezza

Re: Ice fishing in Norway

Hi guys, thank you for your postings pm's etc.
To be honest I'm going flat out so I don't have much time for forums and stuff at the moment. I’ve had a book published in Germany on fishing in Norway. Perhaps I can find somebody to publish it in the UK; that would be fun.

@ Lezza it’s good to here that you've had such success and getting a boating licence and a radio license is excellent. I wish more people would take boating that seriously. Apart from the safety it adds to ones enjoyment and improves the fishing.
@ All: The trips to Norway are a lot of fun and we've had some good to mind blowing fish. Ling up to 30 kg, coalfish in the 15 - 16 kg bracket and lots of cod in the 10 - 17 kg range. I've started targeting Pollack recently and we've had 9 kg fish on most trips. They are very different to the fish that one catches over the channel wrecks in winter. They are not deep, not full of spawn and go like hell.
There are a few down sides: there are now a lot of boats after the big ling so the average size on certain marks has gone down, but there are lots of other spots and although its a bit of a bother sometimes; if the weather is okay I pretty much always have a spot where the big mamas are waiting
The last trip this year resulted in a 15 kg Ling, 15 kg coalfish and a 9 kg Pollack for one guy. Funny how some people’s number seems to come up all the time.
@ Forum trip: I would love to; obviously.
But now it gets sticky I have given a travel agent in the Uk the rights to market these trips. (If I’m out fishing all the time I can't help people with flights and stuff) That has the advantage that there's no messing around with, banking costs, exchange rates and such and that every trip is perfectly organised from start to finish, liability insurance, the whole bit. The down side is that I can’t go around him, that wouldn’t be fair.
I don't know if I'm allowed to give you his name but here goes; its Richard Sheard from World Sport Fishing. If I’m not allowed to do that, please excuse me. If it gets deleted then pm me and I'll send anyone who’s interested the details.
There is an individual’s trip organised for June so Richard would be happy to coordinate everything.
If you chaps want to get a forum trip together then I would be flattered, if the weather allows us we could try a few things that I haven’t got round to in 2007. Like a likely halibut spot that is just of the chart. And the midnight-sun-coalfish-trips you won’t believe.
Robert
