| Re: Where? Hi Maurice. Finnish Lapland or Northern Sweden are about your nearest for ice fishing. I'm sure that if you tried it you would enjoy it. Best times of year are from the end of September to about the end of March, after and before that the ice is too thin. Species I have caught in Lapland are pike, trout and perch. The rods used are like childrens toys, little plastic things about two foot long with the reel built into the handle of the rod. When a fish is hooked the angler doesn't wind in using the reel, he or she pulls the fish in by getting hold of the line and lifting the fish onto the ice. The hold drilled in the ice has to be kept clear of freezing up, as the water refreezes in about twenty to thirty seconds so a scoop is used to clear the hole of this ice. Baits used vary between trout pellets, small spoons, raisins and small pirks. Because it's a dry cold, not like here in the U.K. where it's damp, it's great to sit up to your waist in snow in temperatures of 20% below freezing and not be cold, fishing through a six inch hole in the ice. Tight Lines Sam. |

| Re: Where? OK so maybe I am trying a bit too hard to nab every thread here. ![]() I've seen Ice fishing from cabins and can understand why it's done in climates where it's absolutely bleedin' freezin' outside. ![]() How many British anglers have been fishing when all they have is a small hole in the ice and actually caught? Me I've been there at Warren Mill when all that's left is the small hole where ducks fart and caught nowt. ![]() Has anyone int he UK caught a good fish in these conditions? ![]() __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk |

| Re: Where? It's started here,The buddy I went out w/last year has already been out. While he and his party were out, a fella pulled up at the boat ramp pulled out a chain saw, cut a big square hole, shoved the block under the ice. Stuck a big hose in the water and pumped in 3000 hatchery trout (esp. for the ice crowd) They were blanking till then, before they left, all had gotten their limits. (Standing Bear in Northwest Omaha) Plus I've seen 3 huts on a local flood control rez closer to my house. The ice is still a bit thin for my comfort level (read:my fat a$$) ![]() __________________ A bad day fishing is better than a good day working!
