A Poor (Cod) start to the New Year

Having bought a load of Lug worm at the weekend, and despite me warning everyone that Chesil was fishing pants, I decided to go and see if I could open the scoring for Portland Pluggers.

I decided to fish only for a couple of hours from 4pm.
Destination check point, as I have had some nice catches from there in the past few months.

Wind was a brisk SW but not too much chop or swell on the water.

I like to try and start my fishing sessions in the daylight if I can. It allows me to see how far my casts are going in the conditions and also gives me a chance to see where the last high water mark was.

I loaded my first rod with a 3/0 Pennel rig and half a dozen lug, which despite the head wind, I managed to bang out about 80m. The second rod was loaded with frozen Hermit.

Nothing for the first hour which was mainly daylight into late dusk. As soon as it went dark, the hooks were coming back bare.

After about 6 casts I finally hooked into the first and only fish of the session. A small Poor Cod. Well at least it's a start to the species hunt. So out came the camera only to have the message " Change battery now", then it shut down. :-( I took a quick pic with my mobile phone, but as I can not seem to get it to sync with my PC I wont bother claiming the first of our species for this year. At least it wasn't something that isn't likely to come around again this year. Lesson learnt. Always make sure your camera is charged.

I might try for a flounder in Weymouth harbour tomorrow afternoon or Thursday morning.

Portland Pirate.
